I had heard that Avalon had mostly new ships and that the newest river boats usually had bigger cabins, so decided to give them a try when we sailed the Danube last year. My wife and I were very happy with the choice -- the room had big windows and we enjoyed being able to eat outside, which is something you don't find on some of the older river ships, The shore excursions were good, too, and we didn't have to pay extra for them, which made it more affordable all arouind.

Our trip on Avalon was a delight.  We could not find a single thing to criticize.  The crew, tour director and ancillary staff were wonderful. I do recommend doing the prepayment of tips because you won't be disappointed and wont have to scramble at the end of the tour to find the "trinkgeld" (tips).

Don't hesitate with Avalon, the food, ship, excursions are all wonderful.

Germany/Austria River Cruise with Land portion

My husband and I had a fantastic time cruising France with Avalon.  The food and service were excellent and the crew quite accommodating.  Our cabin was nicely furnished and comfortable - very clean with nice turn-down service.  The daily excursion and dining choices gave us good options to enjoy our vacation time as we chose.  Looking forward to future trips with Avalon!

Every experience is well planned, the meals are beautifully executed and the ships have the best panoramic suites on the rivers. Once you board the ship, everything is taken care of for you so you can relax and enjoy it. 
Having sailed the Rhine, the Danube and the Seine already, I am looking forward to planning my next river cruise with Avalon.

We have taken two cruises with Avalon.  The first was the Rhine River, and we were so pleased with them, that we chose them for our second cruise, on the Danube River.  Both times the cruise directors were well informed and personable.  The guides provided by Avalon in the cities we visited were also well informed.  The musical entertainment provided in the evenings on the Danube River cruise was excellent.  We had members of national orchestras perform.  

Our room and bathroom were excellent.  We did get a slightly upgraded room.  It's wonderful to have access to a cappuccino / espresso machine at all hours, and the lounge area of the ship was spacious and comfortable.  I heartily recommend Avalon Waterways.

They might not be as well known as the other line, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Avalon to others, or to take another cruise with them.

My trip from  Burcharest to Prague was outstanding. I would do the entire trip over again. I am so glad I started in Burcharest as the places we stopped at  on the lower Danube were untouched by commercialism and quite charming. The food on the boat was superb and the accommodations and service was top notch. 
Burcharest is a beautiful city and Prague is a city everyone must see

I have taken two cruises with Avalon. Each cruise has fully met my expectations and then some. The ships are clean and staterooms are comfortable. On both cruises, we were in the lowest deck. The rooms had water level windows. On the first cruise, we booked late so these were the only ones available. On the second cruise, this past May (2015), we deliberately chose to take a similar room. Why? It is comfortable and quiet. You don't spend much time there. When we were on the move, we spent our time in the lounges or on the sky deck looking at scenery. The lounges are comfortable, and they make it easy to socialize and meet passengers from different countries.
The food is simply superb; it was fresh and expertly prepared and presented. The wait staff was excellent and after two meals, they had a very good handle on your desires. I particularly liked the lunches as the food served was typical of the region through which the ship was traveling. Lunch and breakfast were buffet style with some made to order items. 
The excursions, both included and optional were interesting and fact filled. Local guides were excellent and informative.
The ship's crews were great, smiling, and helpful. 
The cruise directors were outstanding  and took a lot of the stress out of visiting the cities. 
All in all, I highly recommend  Avalon. My wife and I will be traveling with them again. We don't know when as we do have other trips to take where Avalon does not sail. But, our next river cruise in Europe will definitely be with Avalon.

We had an amazing trip on the Cambodia and Vietnam excursion offered by Avalon. We started in Siem Reap and spent 3 days taking in the wonders of the Temples of Ankgor Wat along with many other Temples in the area. The Temples are a must see before commercialism takes over the area. We had very nice accommodations at the Victoria hotel in Siem Reap. We boarded the Avalon Siem Reap for the cruising part of our trip. We travelled from Phenom Penh where we had to board due to low water on the lake. We did still go up stream to see as many of the sights as possible with the low water. The ship is beautiful! just launched in 2015 and it shows. The staterooms are large with full wall windows to view the cruise from your room, but you don't want to stay in your room with a beautiful, comfortable observation lounge and the outside viewing deck. The amount of rooms on the ship (18) lends itself to encouraging everyone to get to know each other. 
We were traveling with 2 other friends, but by the end of the trip we knew everyone and established lasting friendships. The cruise down the river was  amazing. We were able to dock and visit local villages along the way and really felt like we were experiencing local culture. Our cruise director Phiem was wonderful. He made sure that each guest received personal attention as well as giving information about what to expect along the way. A special part of the trip was getting to travel through a narrow trade canal where most passenger boats are too big to travel on. Following the river cruise we docked in Ho Chi Minh City and had a whirlwind stay there, we could have stayed there at least one more day. We elected to take the extension to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, well worth the trip. Ha Long Bay is about four hours each way from Hanoi but is really a mystical place. We were glad that we traveled to South and North Vietnam, both places had their own uniqueness. Avalon did a great job with excursions and immersing us in the local culture. We really liked the small group feel. We would highly recommend this trip.

Our Avalon ship cruise on the Rhine was simply wonderful.  Our party had the two Royal Suites on the ship, and they are exceptional.  The addition of the interior space because of the sliding glass doors really makes a difference, and when they are open, there is really no difference when compared to a balcony design.  We had friends on a competing line during the same time, and the feedback was that Avalon had much better food and wine, similar excursions, and similar staff.  We also liked the smaller size of the Avalon compared to the Viking ships.

Great food, great accomodations, great people!

Beautiful scenery that we were lucky enough to see. We met some really fun people, and actually made some good friends that we still keep in touch with. I absolutely recommend the
Avalon Riverboat Cruise to anyone looking for 
a very special vacation. One that you will never forget. I can't wait to take another trip with them
