  •  Get a different view of Old Town Vilnius and the countryside surrounding the city by taking a hot air balloon ride. Every ride is different depending on the weather and wind direction, but expert pilots will make sure you touch down safely — just remember to bring your passport in case your landing spot happens to be across the Lithuanian border!
  • Take a trip to the Hill of Crosses outside of Siauliai. Thought to have been the site of an ancient hill fort, the hill is now covered in thousands of wooden crosses placed there by pilgrims and residents of the area as signs of faith and patriotism; the Hill of Crosses remains one of the world’s most important and unique Catholic pilgrimage sites.
  • Visit the Europos Parkas just outside of Vilnius. This park & museum marks the exact geographic center of Europe, and features over 130 acres of modern art and sculptures which can be explored by foot or bicycle.
  • For a day of muddy outdoor fun, go on a guided walk of Lithuania’s Kulgrindas. The Kulgrindas are ancient stony roads built across swampy areas of the countryside, undetectable from the surface and originally intended as escape routes for locals in case of invasion; now, they’re a testament to Lithuania’s fascinating history and a unique way to see the countryside.
  • Take a walk through the Hill of Witches outside Juodkrante, in the northern part of the country. The Hill of Witches is an outdoor sculpture park created in 1979, which features locally-made handcrafted carvings depicting the best-known stories and legends of Lithuanian folk history.
  • Explore the Lithuanian countryside and learn about the tradition of beekeeping in the rural village of Musteika. Beekeeping is a long-standing part of Lithuanian culture and mythology, and Musteika has maintained the practice amongst other traditional cultural customs; it even has its own beekeeping museum full of information and beekeeping equipment.
  • Walk along the Anykščiai Treetop Walking Path in the Anykščiai Regional Park outside of Vilnius. The walkway rests 35 meters above the forest floor and offers beautiful views of the woods and a unique outdoor activity.
  • Get a taste of traditional Lithuanian cuisine by trying a dish such as chilled borscht (cold beetroot soup) or “spit cake” — cake made by cooking batter on a spit as it turns. Ask your tour guide for recommendations on the best places to try the local food.
  • Explore one (or several!) of Lithuania’s five famous national parks for plenty of hiking, biking, and water sports. You can even take a boat out to the Trakai Island Castle in the Trakai Historical National Park, or walk through the shifting sand dunes of the Curonian Spit.
  • Relax and recharge at one of Lithuania’s resort towns, such as Druskininkai and Birštonas. Located on the Nemunas River, these towns are known for their mineral waters and health spas which offer treatments such as massages, facials, and mud baths.

Things to do in Lithuania - Expert's guide

  1. Old Town Vilnius: Vilnius is Lithuania’s capital, and the city’s medieval Old Town is a must-see on any trip to this beautiful Baltic country. A certified UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vilnius boasts incredibly well-preserved architecture in a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Wander through the ancient cobbled streets filled with restaurants, cafes, and markets, and explore landmarks such as St. Anne’s Church and the Presidential Palace. Once home to one of Europe’s largest Jewish populations, the city’s Jewish Quarters are also worth a visit!
  2. St. Anne’s Church: Built between 1495-1500, St. Anne’s is a Roman Catholic church located in Old Town Vilnius, and is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Originally constructed in wood in the early 1400s, the church burned down and was rebuilt into its current brick form. The church’s presence in Old Town helped the area to gain official UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and its stunning brick towers and rose windows remain a landmark within the city.
  3. The Republic of Uzupis: Once a district within Vilnius, Uzupis is located across the river Vilnia from Old Town Vilnius. It declared itself an independent republic in 1998, and developed its own flag, government, constitution, and unofficial currency. Whether this declaration of statehood was serious or humorous is a matter of debate; regardless, Uzupis is known for its artistic and bohemian atmosphere, and still houses a large number of artists within its small area. With its unique character and rich history, Uzupis is a fascinating addition to your itinerary while visiting Vilnius
  4. Trakai Historical National Park + Trakai Island Castle: One of Lithuania’s most-visited national parks, the Trakai Historical National Park was established in 1991 and is home to the beautiful village of Trakai as well as the Trakai Island Castle. Boasting hundreds of lakes, the Trakai region is a perfect choice for outdoor activities, and the village itself is an important historical and cultural site within Lithuania. The Trakai Island Castle is a 14th century castle built on Lake Galve outside the town of Trakai, and is a beautiful landmark in its own right. Only about thirty minutes outside of Vilnius, this region is perfect for both day trips and overnight stays.
  5. Kaunas: Lithuania’s second-largest city, Kaunas is located in the central area of the country where the rivers Neris and Nemunas converge. Between 1920-1939, Kaunas served as Lithuania’s temporary capital; today, it is still known for its vibrant cultural, academic, and economic life, as well as its stunning architecture and thriving arts scene. This charming city is another essential on any Lithuania tour.
  6. Hill of Crosses: Located twelve kilometers outside the city of Siauliai in northern Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses is one of the world’s most interesting Catholic pilgrimage sites. Thought to have once been the site of an ancient hill fort, the hill is now covered in over 100,000 crosses brought by pilgrims; crucifixes, patriotic carvings, rosaries, and statues of the Virgin Mary are also present in great numbers. The beginnings of this tradition are unknown, but the Hill of Crosses has become a symbol of both Catholic faith and Lithuanian independence and patriotism.
  7. Curonian Spit + Kursiu Nerija National Park: Located within the larger Kursiu Nerija National Park, the Curonian Spit and the accompanying Curonian Lagoon is one of the most beautiful locations in Lithuania. Nearly 100 kilometers long, the Curonian Spit is a thin peninsula on Lithuania’s Baltic coast featuring beautiful shifting sand dunes that are some of the highest in Europe. The Spit protects the Curonian Lagoon, which is a protected habitat home to many different plant and animal species. There are many picturesque towns dotted along the Curonian Spit, including Nida and Neringa, two well-known resort and spa destinations within Lithuania.
  8. Neringa: Located on the Curonian Spit within the Kursiu Nerija National park, the region of Neringa is known as a favored spa destination within Lithuania, as the Baltic coastline and the mineral-rich waters of the region are said to be helpful for healing illnesses. With its beautiful forests, sand dunes, and beaches, Neringa is also a perfect destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, windsurfing, and fishing.
  9. Hill of Witches: Established in 1979, the Hill of Witches is an outdoor sculpture park located in the town of Juodkrante on the Curonian Spit. The sculptures showcase popular characters from Lithuanian folk traditions in the area; each one is handcrafted by a local artist. Each summer, Midsummer’s Eve celebrations take place on the hill; renamed St. Jonas’ Festival following the Christianization of Lithuania, the practice still reflects the country’s older traditions. The Hill of Witches is a free-of-charge public path, and is a fantastic way to get to know Lithuania’s culture and folk history.
  10. Aukstaitija National Park: Aukstaitija National Park is Lithuania’s oldest national park, and boasts over 400 square kilometers of forests, rivers, lakes, and over 116 traditional villages (some of which date back to the 14th century). Over 70% of the park is covered by forest, and there are around 30 rivers and 126 lakes within its boundaries. Some of the pine stands within the park are over 200 years old, and it’s one of the most biodiverse regions of Lithuania.
