The capital of the Czech Republic is also known as the 'city of thousand spires,' and you can see why. 1. Prague Castle
Dating back to the 9th century, this complex was the seat of power of Bohemian kings, Roman emperors, and Czechoslovakia presidents and is witness to some of the most significant moments of the history of the region. This is the world's largest ancient castle and is one of the most visited attractions of Prague, and is currently used as the office of the Czech President.
2. Charles Bridge
This iconic bridge of the 14th century was built in the place of Judith Bridge that was destroyed by the flood. Until 1841, it was the only way to cross the river, making an important connection between the castle and Old Town. The bridge made Prague the most important trade route between Western and Eastern Europe.
3. Prague Astronomical Clock
This mechanical clock face is a 600-years old medieval structure of the capital. Installed in 1410, it is the third-oldest astronomical clock that is still operational, and the third-oldest to be installed ever. At each hour bang, the 12 Apostles and other figures come into appearance and parade across the clock face.
4. St. Vitus Cathedral
This metropolitan Roman Catholic cathedral was dedicated to Saint Vitus till 1997 and is still known by the name. With its impressive Gothic architecture, this cathedral is one of the largest and most important churches in history. The shrine is not only home to the tombs of many Holy Roman Emperors and Bohemian kings, but they were also crowned in this mighty cathedral.
5. Národní Muzeum
The National Museum wan established with an intention to establish, prepare, and exhibit the history and natural science collections of the country. There are more than 14 million items in the museum related to history, natural history, music, arts, and librarianship. The museum is spread across various houses and locations across the city, exhibiting various important items.
6. The Prague Municipal House
This civic building is a fine example of Art Nouveau in Prague. Home to the largest and most important concert venue of the city, Smetana Hall, this splendid structure was built in 1912.
The most striking features of the building include its large dome, sumptuous facade, and a large mural on the second-floor balcony, above the arch. Filled with important paintings and fine stained glass windows, the interior of the house is also very impressive.
7. Prague Zoo
This amazing zoo was opened in 1931 with an aim to advance in the zoological study, protect wildlife, and also educate the common people about it.
Today it ranks among one of the top zoological parks of the world. With a collection of more than 650 animal species, including many who are close to extinction, the zoo houses more than 4000 animals. Enjoy the indoor tropical jungle, chairlift ride, and a closer view of many animal enclosures.
8. Josefov
This town quarter was formerly the town's Jewish ghetto and is the smallest cadastral area of the town. Stroll around the area and visit the attractions like the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Klaus Synagogue, the Ceremonial Hall, the Maisel Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, and the Spanish Synagogue.
9. The Petrín Lookout Tower
This 63.5-meter tall steel-framework tower was built in 1891 and a structure somehow similar to the Eiffel Tower. This tower is a major tourist attraction and is used as a transmission tower as well as an observation tower. Take a 30-minute walking tour to the top or hop into the funicular railway.
10. The Dancing House
The modern architectural building is an outstanding creation, designed by Frank Gehry. The structure comprises two adjoining towers that are structured in unique curves, resembling two dancing figures. The building consists mostly of hotels and offices, and you can enjoy sweeping views from the restaurant on the top floor.
