One week in Austria is enough time to get a taste for this diverse and interesting country. You can spend time bopping from one attraction to the next, taking in cultural, historical and natural landmarks.
This itinerary utilizes two major cities as the base for your explorations, as you can delve deeply into both the fascinating cultural meccas and the countryside from each.
Days 1-2, Vienna: Your first day in Vienna will be mostly about taking in the city’s attractions through either a walking tour or a hop on and off bus tour. Some of the major sights include St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg museum, Schonbrunn Palace and the Belvedere Palace. If you need a pick-me-up, try the Viennese coffee.
Day 3, Wachau Valley: Take a daytrip from Vienna on a day long river cruise through the Danube River and the Wachau Valley. Stop and savor the local wines and cuisines along the way. Or meander through the valley’s beautiful countryside.
Days 4-5 ,Salzburg: A visit to the beautiful Old Town of Salzburg will leave your imagination full of history and culture. Additionally, visit the High Castle that looks down upon the town. Let’s not forget that Salzburg is known as the filming location for the Sound of Music and is the birthplace of Mozart, so those looking to dive into the arts and history will enjoy this stay in Salzburg.
Days 6-7, Day Trips from Salzburg: There are many interesting day trips you can take from Salzburg including a visit to the beer-loving city of Munich, the mountainous and adventurous Berchtesgaden or the stunning castle of Werfen. All are within 1.5 hours of Salzburg and can make for adventurous days.

Many visitors to this part of Europe for 2 weeks like to combine their trip with other neighboring countries such as including a visit to Prague or Budapest, or exploring Germany.
That being said, each country has a lot to discover from staying in the place and really diving into its cities, culture and history. Austria has lots to explore on an extended trip. This particular itinerary balances both desires by diving deeper into Austria over 10 days and adding a visit to Budapest, Hungary.
Days 1-3, Budapest: A visit to the fantastic city of Budapest is sure to be very relaxing and interesting. A city known as the city of spas, Budapest is home to a plethora of thermal baths including the Széchenyi baths where you can bathe surrounded by Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance architecture.
That being said, a visit to Budapest is well-spent visiting the architectural and cultural gems of Fisherman’s Bastion, the Buda Castle or the Hungarian Parliament.
You can additionally enjoy craft beverages and ruins in one of the local ruin bars such as Szimpla Kert, one known for its quirky decorations. Take your time getting to know this unique city!
Days 4-10, Follow the 1 week itinerary above, starting in Vienna
Days 11-14, Tirol and Innsbruck Mountains: Enjoy the last days of your trip soaking in the majestic mountain ranges that make Austria famous. Whether you are an avid hiker or would like to take in the views from a relaxing patio, a visit to these mountain ranges is sure to be impressive. Consider departing from Munich or make your way back to Vienna or Budapest for your trip home.

Days 4-5, Wachau Valley: Enjoy Wachau Valley, just outside of Vienna, where you can meet local chefs and winemakers. Indulge in the local wines, farm-to-table cuisines such as the local Danube Char, called Saibling or the wild mushroom ravioli. Additionally, explore the beautiful landscapes on a day boat trip on the Danube, a walk through the quaint towns or a hike in the valley.
Days 6-7, Salzburg: A trip to Salzburg, which is already a cultural and sightseeing gem, can be enhanced with adding in foodie tours and delights. In particular, the town offers regional cuisines pumpkin seed sausages, mozartkugel (local chocolate), and secret dumplings.
You can taste these and other sweets, drinks and Austrian delicacies at Artisanal markets or lovely restaurants. Take a tour or ask a local and your stay will include a journey for your taste buds.
