Classic Eastern Europe Itineraries

Eastern Europe in 1 Week

One week in Eastern Europe isn’t nearly enough time to explore the entire region, but it is enough time to get a good taste of a few countries. Exploring the Baltic countries is a great introduction to Eastern European culture and history.

Day 1, Tallinn, Estonia: Spend your first day in the Baltics exploring Tallinn’s Town Hall Square and Old Town. Check out the handicrafts market in the Square during summer, or walk along the ancient city wall bordering the city.  

Days 2 and 3, Riga, Latvia: Walk around Riga admiring the art-nouveau architecture. Stop by the Three Brother, a set of three houses on Mazā Pils Street dating back to the 15th century.

Days 4 and 5, Vilnius, Lithuania: Visit some of the 28 catholic churches in Riga. Climb up to the campanile of St. John’s church for the highest point in town, and a stunning view of the city below. Rent a boat to explore the green lakes of Verkiai Regional Park.

Days 6 and 7, Warsaw, Poland: Stroll through Old Town, stopping to shop artisanal goods from stalls in the town square before heading the the Royal Castle. If the season is right, take in a free concert on the banks of the Vistula River.

Eastern Europe in 2 weeks

Two weeks in Eastern Europe gives you more time to explore more countries in this diverse region. This two week itinerary will take you through the top destinations in Eastern Europe.

Days 1 and 2, Budapest, Hungary: Spend your first days in Eastern Europe soaking up the cultural and political history of Budapest. Visit the Hungarian Parliament building, an architectural jewel on the banks of the Danube.  

Days 3 and 4, Bucharest, Romania: Rent a bike to ride through Herăstrău Park (free for those over 65) or take a stroll along the lake. Take a tour through the Palace of Parliament, the biggest parliamentary building in the world.

Days 5 and 6, Sofia, Bulgaria: Visit St. George Rotunda, the oldest building in Sofia built in the 300s. Soak up some local history in the National Historical Museum. Watch a free concert in Borisova Gradina on a summer evening.

Day 7, Belgrade: Head to Nikola Pašić Square, then to the Belgrade Design District to shop unique local designs. Enjoy an afternoon in Kalemegdan Forest then watch the sunset from the fortress walls.

Danube River Cruise Itinerary

A Danube River cruise tour is the perfect way to visit many countries in a short period of time with an easy physical level.

Days 1-2, Romania: Start your cruise in Romania, visiting the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest before heading to the port of Giurgiu to meet your ship.

Days 3-4, Bulgaria: Sail down the Danube to Bulgaria. Spend the day at two cave monasteries in the hills just outside Rousse.

Days 5-6, Serbia: Continue into Serbia, stopping in the port of Golubac. Visit the Golubac Fortress and Tuman Monastery.

Days 7-8, Croatia: Float into Croatia’s biggest port on the Danube, Vukovar, for your final days. Visit the Vučedol Culture Museum and the Vukovar water tower to learn about the Battle of Vukovar.
