Classic Gorilla Trekking Itineraries
One week in Rwanda is enough time to track gorillas, hike in the rainforest, and see a variety of wildlife. Rwanda gorilla trekking is known for its beautiful forests and luxurious accommodation.
Day 1, Kigali: Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Rwanda Arts Museum in the Rwandan capital city.
Day 2-3, Volcanoes National Park: Track mountain gorillas, see the extremely rare golden monkey, and climb Mount Bisoke in Rwanda’s most popular national park.
Day 4, Lake Kivu: Visit the massive Lake Kivu for more wildlife experiences and proximity to the famous Congo Nile Trail.
Day 5-7, Congo Nile Trail: Experienced backpackers might take on a three-day camping trek on the Congo Nile Trail, while less seasoned athletes may choose to hike or bike parts of the trail while staying in lodges.
While a one-week trip might be limited to tracking and viewing gorillas, two weeks is the perfect amount of time to see gorillas and other wildlife while also experiencing the beauty and culture of Rwanda and Uganda.
Day 1-2, Kampala: The capital city of Uganda is filled with museums, markets, and cathedrals. Highlights include the Uganda Museum and the Kasubi Tombs.
Day 3, Lake Mburo: Take a boat tour on Lake Mburo to see hippos, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds
Day 4, Kazinga Channel: Enjoy the abundant wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park at the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake George and Lake Edward.
Day 5-7, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Hike, track, and see rare mountain gorillas in their natural habitats.
Day 8-9, Volcanoes National Park: See the extremely rare golden monkey, track more gorillas, and climb Mount Bisoke in Rwanda’s most popular national park.
Day 10, Nyungwe Forest: Take an exhilarating walk on the forest’s famous Canopy Walkway, a suspension bridge 230 feet in the air.
Day 11-13, Congo Nile Trail: Spend three days hiking or cycling the famous trail along Lake Kivu.
Day 14, Kigali: Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Rwanda Arts Museum in the Rwandan capital city, which is now known for its thriving arts scene and fine dining.
