Chobe National Park, Johannesburg, Kalahari Desert, Kruger National Park, Limpopo, Maun, Okavango Delta, Soweto, Victoria, Victoria Falls

Highlights

  • Head out on a very special bush walk with members of the world's first all-female anti-poaching unit, the Black Mambas. During this exclusive experience, learn how they're deterring poachers and patrolling 20,000 hectares of nature reserve, then spend the evening listening to their stories by the campfire.
  • Go in search of Africa’s Big Five on full-day 4WD game drive in Kruger National Park.
  • Spot wildlife in Chobe National Park during a sunset river cruise. This is when many animals – such as elephants, cheetahs and lions – come to drink, so get your cameras ready!
  • Experience the untouched wilderness of Botswana's Okavango Delta by staying on a remote island bush camp. At night, the sounds of the African bush are the only things you will hear.
  • Visit the only place in Botswana where both the white and black rhinos still remain: the Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

What travelers are saying

"Our South African Adventure kicked off with meticulous planning by Safari365 and ended with a camera roll full of memories . We came for the Big Five and left with big smiles, epic stories and a postcard-worthy photo from practically every corner. The star of the planning show was consultant Zannon, who booked accommodation at Tintswalo Lodge; so perfectly tailored to our family of five (grandparents, parents, 9-year-old granddaughter). It felt like we'd been VIPs in a National Geographic documentary (we got up close and touching a rhino and lion after a helicopter darting thanks to Riian our guide). Meanwhile, Trevor, our personal concierge, tackled our endless questions and gave us foodie-approved dining suggestions and fun activities in Cape Town. Who knew penguin-spotting could work up such an appetite? As our wildlife sightings and scenery numbers skyrocketed, so did our photo-clicking frenzy. By the time the trip was over, we had more snaps than a Kardashian at Fashion Week. Luckily, Safari365 anticipated this paparazzi-level behavior and gifted us an A4 20-page bonus photo book! Picking 50 photos felt like choosing a favourite child, but memories are memories. Uploading those photos from home was a breeze, and in no time—voilà, Bob’s Your Uncle!—an A4 hardcover photo book landed on our doorstep. The bonus photo book had turned our snaps into a coffee table masterpiece; it’s packed with our journey, African trivia, and even a traditional recipe. Friends actually want to flip through it, proving once and for all that a photo book beats squinting at my phone any day. Well done Safari365, the bonus photobook, another initiative first, a success and much appreciated. We had a Roaring good time."

Okavango Delta Tour Selection Trips

  • Much of the best wildlife viewing in the Delta can be found in the private reserves, just outside Moremi Game Reserve (a national park), though many are accessible only by air.
  • Allow at least a week for a safari combining the Okavango Delta’s private reserves with the public Moremi Game Reserve.
  • Many tour operators combine Okavango Delta safaris with visits to Botswana’s Chobe National Park and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, both nearby, while some also venture into more remote regions of the Kalahari.
  • The dry (and high) season – with the best wildlife viewing – is in July and August, when animals come to drink in newly flooded regions.
  • The hot, rainy season (November to March) can make roads difficult, but brings lush vegetation, wildflowers, lots of baby animals, and lower prices.
  • Accommodations in the Delta range from luxurious private lodges to rustic campsites.
  • The luxury lodges are among the most expensive in all of Africa -- and, in general, prices are higher in this remote region.
  • If close encounters with crocodiles and hippos make you nervous, you might carefully consider whether or not to take a dugout canoe ride – though it’s an unforgettable experience.

Additional details

Where is the Okavango Delta?

Okavango Delta is a 2 million hectare jewel of Africa, located in north-west Botswana and is mainly a mixture of seasonally flooded plains and permanent marshlands. This swampy inland delta is in the central part of Kalahari's endorheic basin, where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough. The water reaching here is either evaporated or transpired but never flows to any ocean or sea.

Best time to visit

Okavango Delta is a year-round destination, but what you get visiting there depends on when you are going. April to October is the dry season, while November to March is the wet season. May to August have the most pleasant weather, and you can have a great time with respect to the atmosphere.

July to October is the high season when most of the people come here to visit, and as a result, everything has a high rate at this time. September and October are extremely hot and could be inconvenient to visit. But if you go during this time, there is a huge chance to explore wildlife because the thirsty animals at that time are found on the fringes. November to March is the low season, and you can get discounted prices, especially for accommodation.

When to visit the Okavango Delta for specific wildlife

The dry months of May to August draw wildlife to the region. The rains have stopped by the time, and the water has reached the Delta attracting all the wildlife. Between the months of March to May, the grass is high with thick bushes but wet, of course, so there is a greater chance to witness big cats walking around the tracks, avoiding grass.

The weather is chilly, but you can have a good time with proper warm clothes and with all the beautiful species, visiting there in a bit of cold is really worth it. In addition to the big five, you will have the opportunity to see many predators like a hyena, leopard, jackal, etc. as well as herds of buffalo, zebra, elephant, wildebeest, etc. around the water source. Baboon, giraffe, African wild dog, and warthog can also be seen anywhere in the region.

By October, the dusty clouds start appearing through the sky, waiting to be dispersed by the summer rains. September and October attract various animals out to the water that is left now, making it easier to spot various species.

During the wet season, from November to April, with the frequent rainfall, animals go back to the deep lush green interior, but this is the time for the birdwatchers. Various species of migrant birds arrive here by that time and are nesting and breeding, meaning you have a greater chance of having an encounter with most of them. There are more than 400 bird species that make this place an extraordinary spot for bird lovers.
