Czech Republic History Trips & Packages Tour & Trip...

Did a long break trip (or fall break) with Euroadventures on their "Best of the East" adventure.  I had always wanted to travel to the destinations (especially Prague, Krakow &amp; Budapest) and the trip and organization did not disappoint.  Everything really was top notch from the itinerary and pace of the trip to the accommodations to the trip leader.  By the end of the trip our group went from strangers (there were some traveling together as groups of friends) to all great friends.  Highly recommend this trip, especially for those looking for something slightly off the beaten path (especially Krakow) and this company.

We loved our local contact Alena, our landlord Eva and her husband David who also helped us, the upstairs neighbor Elisa who helped orient us on our first day, the specific location of the apartment and the feeling we were living in a neighborhood, shopping at the local mini-markets, eating in local restaurants, talking with locals, all the magnificent medieval sights including churches and town squares, music in the churches, feeling safe while walking at all hours of day and night.

No, everything was as expected. In my case

Not a critiscm but a personal choice. I like to make early morning tea, only 
2 hotels had a kettle and 2 had coffee machines in the rooms, so a kettle 
could be handy.


The tour ran Saturday to Sunday, I think an extra day would be useful, 
possibly in Vienna or a small place not easily accesible by 'weekend flights'

Central Europe: Castles, Culture & Capitals

I will deal with the 'but' first.  This is definitely not a 1; leisurely; 
more a 2, moderate. The distances to walk are comparatively large and the 
surfaces (cobblestones mainly) are not conducive to fast walking even if you 
can, and, of course, as always, the speed of the group is governed by the 
speed of the slowest person.
That said,  it's a wonderful introduction to the cities and towns visited, 
their history and how their infrastructure works. The Tatra mountains are 
beautiful and welcome break. I will definitely go back to most of the cities. 
Each has a feel and charm of its own and, except Vienna, are cheap (for a 
Londoner) to stay, eat and travel in. This trip is great if you want to get a 
feel for central Europe; you see loads albeit  the pace and itinerary don't 
allow time to dwell and ponder what you are looking at. You are in a region 
of wonderful and gory history and there are massive amounts to take in.
No particular inspirational moment, but the feel of the central market area 
in Krakow and the salt mines do stand out.


Peter our guide was brilliantly knowledgeable (much more than the usual 
excellent Exodus guides), very personable, was always there to resolve the 
inevitable issues but not firm enough on timing leading to people wandering 
off to the shops etc. thus delaying the group.


Take a couple of good comfortable walking shoes; there's a lot of it, and a 
good water bottle. The tap water is fine and freely available.

Its difficult to work out what cash you'll need; and there are several 
currencies. If you travel abroad check out the right debit card with no 
commissions and commercial rates and credit card for the same reasons. There 
are lots of ATMs and that way you can pull cash as you need it (always use a 
'bank' atm to avoid the 3rd party charges) and decline 'their' exchange rate; 
and/or use your CC where you can (charged in local currency). It'll save you 
sizeable amounts and not leave you with unnecessary cash you have to swap 
around.

DO THIS TRIP. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!!!!

Highlights of Central Central Europe (June 2011) was a marvelous overview of the cities, villages, and countryside of this culturally and scenically rich region, and made particularly enjoyable due to the talents of our guide, Eric S.
1.&nbsp; The Tatra Mountains were superb.&nbsp; I must devise an excuse to return to this region for more hiking.
2.&nbsp; Discovering an ethnographic museum in Krakow's city hall building, which has farmhouse rooms and workplaces, models of buildings and mills, hallways of embroidered folk costumes, and rooms devoted to every craft from woodworking to sheephering and spinning, etc.&nbsp; This museum was a delight and unfortunately doesn't appear in any guidebooks I had, but is annotated on&nbsp;Krakow's "you are here" city maps which appear at key tourist sites.&nbsp; It was looking in the lower middle of that map that enlightened me as to its existance.&nbsp; And, it cost very little to enter, unlike the hugely expensive museums of Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.&nbsp; 

Eric is a delight to travel with and his English is excellent.&nbsp; He has enthusiasm for the region including of course his own beautiful nation of Slovakia, and appreciates the natural and cultural wonders each nation on the tour&nbsp;has to offer and is eager to share it with the group, but in a nice low-key way.&nbsp; Eric is unflappable, kind of like having Buddha for a travel guide, and able to make time for everyone's questions or problems, and yet manage to handle it all.&nbsp; He also seems to know where every ATM is in every town we visited and has restaurants to recommend according to budgets.&nbsp; He will go far out of his way to try to solve travel dilemmas (for example, since I had to leave the group early to connect to another Exodus trip and was worried about some short connection times that changed on me at the last minute due to an airline's own problems, he researched and advised backup bus options in case my plane connections didn't work as planned).

Bring a walking stick and good hiking boots for the Tatras hike.&nbsp; I was warned by an earlier traveler who helped me pack correctly for the trip, and he was right, so I am passing it on.&nbsp; Waiting until you get there is too late to get boots if you didn't bring them with you, although you can borrow hiking sticks from the hotel (if your hotel loans them, ours did) or buy them.&nbsp; If you only bring trainers/sneakers or slick soled shoes, you might slip and fall so hiking boots or equivalent are really most helpful.&nbsp; The trail is good, but rocky, and if wet at all could be even more treacherous.&nbsp; But&nbsp;don't pass it up unless you are really&nbsp;infirm, because the views and waterfalls are spectacular!

Thank you for the excellent mix of Culture (musical concerts in halls and on a Danube River cruise, and assorted museums), superb Mountains (the Tatras for example), Castles and Fortresses, beautiful Cities (Prague for example), and many lovely Villages and Towns throughout the green farmland.&nbsp; What a wonderful trip.

it is a very well orgnized trip, good pace, nice combination of big cities, small towns&nbsp;and mountains. good guide too.
Prague is very beautiful, should spend one more day there

I was a bit worried about being too long on the bus but the timings were so well organised and during these bleak rainy days of winter I think about how happy I was travelling through lovely scenery with a lovely group of people.
I felt that the whole trip was inspirational and I would love to do it again

He was brilliant, relaxed, helpful, lovely sense of humour and great at getting the group to gel so that everyone felt a part of the "family"

I would like to have spent a bit more time in the smaller more picturesque places.
If anyone, like myself travels there and back independently by train make sure you have a map of Prague before you visit and beware of rogue taxi drivers at the station - there are the honest yellow taxis and the rogue ones `
