I loved this trip . The Tucano is a great little ship, and if the weather's good you can eat out on the top deck and watch the river and rain forest go by. The guides were terrific -- they knew the area well, and could tell you about the use of medicinal plants or even take you piranha fishing.  There were plenty of opportunities to go on shore  and occasionally we'd visit an isolated village. My only disappointment was that it's hard to spot wildlife, though we did see some of the famous pink dolphins, heard plenty of howler monkeys, and, at night, spotted some sloths in the tree by spotlight.

It was a privalege to visit this part of the world with international tourism in its infancy. With the exception of one British and one German couple travelling solo no other European tourists were met during our entire, tranquil voyage.

Travelling to the Amazon basin during the dry season proffered jaw dropping spendours and I had not previously anticipated mile upon mile of deserted sandy beaches. 

The itineray for this trip felt perfect with time spent exploring Belem before setting off down river. Three nights aboard both a public and private boat offered very differing experiences. The public boat, in particular, provided insight into how locals travel from one Amazonian city to another even if, at times, I felt slightly uncomfortable and elitist sleeping in one of the few cabins on board. Staff on board our private boat, particularly the two catering staff, were amazing catering for my vegetarian requirements.

Particular highlights for me were: the two nights spent at Pousada Ventania, Marajo Island; the late afternoon and evening, whilst aboard our private boat, small boat trips exploring remote river banks for bird and animal life, discovering the evening habitats of caiman and, meeting local indiginous communities. Marajo was pure paradise and the sort of island I would counjure up if appearing on Desert Island Discs!

The only downside of this trip was that Hotel Louca, Belem offered the worst hotel evening meals I have ever eaten and this was a pity as I stayed here for four nights at the outset of the trip.

All in all one of Explore!'s best trips and one which will be hard to beat in the future.

Brazilian Amazon by Boat

The most incredible trip travelling up the Amazon and its tributaries. So many incredible experiences from the river beaches of the Tapajos and buffalo farms of Marajó to soaking up local life from a hammock on the public boat to Santarém. That boat, though basic, really gave us the chance to travel the Amazon as locals do and the trip is all the better for it. Our three nights on the Rio ***** sleeping in hammocks was wonderful - the crew and our local guide Herman were exceptional. Finally our tour leaders Blanca and Vitor were brilliant - funny, engaged, full of local knowledge.l and made sure I didn’t fall in the Amazon getting on and off boats.

Blanca was a brilliant guide.  A happy, jovial person.  Kept us informed.  Good with people.  One of the strokes of genius was organising laundry @ Parnamirlm just as we needed it.

This was a memorable trip for many of the wrong reasons and a few of the right ones. 

Accommodation- in many respects it is a backpacker trip in terms of quality of accommodation. The pousada on marajo island was very basic and needed some repairs. The public boat is not ‘comfortable’ - the cabins stink of cleaning fluid and are like sleeping in a metal meat locker. We were by the engine and our entire bed was shaking throughout the trip so we got little sleep. Get a hammock like the locals if you don’t mind the sweat. Otherwise hotels are pretty standard 3 stars but nothing special. 

Just as an older review mentions, we found the boat ride was too long and people likewise got sick. I also agree the food was terrible and would recommend reading the Lonely Planet review.

The itinerary leaves a lot of time for hanging round waiting for transport connections after some very early starts - it could be much improved… 

On a more positive note, the private boat was great even if it could have done with fans to help us sleep at night in the hammocks. The Amazon itself was an incredible place to see wildlife and nature close up. The day on Marajo island was awesome.

Overall the reality of this trip is rather different to how it is marketed. It’s expensive for what you actually get  and I really would think twice about booking it if you have any existing health or mobility issues. 

Despite sending all our feedback to Explore we never got a follow-up - there’s definite room for improvement.
