Editoral Review of Whole Journeys
For the last 30 years, many of us know Whole Foods Market® as a grocery store that sources and sells the highest quality natural and organic products available. John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, launched Whole Journeys, an experiential travel company, in 2012. Whole Journeys tours are designed to bring travelers closer to the source of the products that is sold in the grocery stores. The travel company is now independently run by Kathy Dragon, a travel industry veteran.
What Makes Them Stand Out?
Whole Journeys is unique among guided tour operators in that the they specialize in active adventures for foodies. Think cooking classes in Provence, visiting with locals at an outdoor market in Peru, or walking around an olive farm in Sicily. Most of the company’s trips spend at least 2-3 nights in each location, so the traveler doesn’t feel rushed. Group sizes are 16 people maximum, for a small, intimate vibe. In addition to food-focused tours, Whole Journeys also offers health and wellness trips for those interested in improving their health and vitality.
Who Travels With Them?
Similar to Whole Foods Market, Whole Journeys offers premium products, which tend to attract a mix of couples, friends, and some solo travelers. All travelers share a love of food and adventure and yearn to get closer to the artisans and farmers who grow, bake, and create some of the world’s most delicious culinary treats.
Where Do They Operate?
Many Whole Journeys trips will take you to Europe, specifically Italy and France. Other more exotic trips exist, like adventures in Peru, India, and China. Most trips are available for private departures at an extra cost. The company uses a mix of boutique hotels and local, authentic guesthouses and homestays.
Why Travel with Them?
If you are a foodie at heart and enjoy rolling up your sleeves in the kitchen, then a Whole Journeys trip could be for you. Active travelers who like a mix of adventure and culture may also be a good fit for a Whole Journeys trip.

About the company
Whole Journeys grew from our vision to bring the values, the passion, and the taste of Whole Foods Market beyond our stores and further connect our customers to the culture of food in particular regions. The Whole Journeys “Active Foodie” adventures explore the local landscapes through activities like walking between historic villages, cycling through breathtaking country sides, and rafting legendary rivers while focusing on the culture and traditions of food in the destination. For those interested in diving deeper into learning how to create regional recipes, we offer our “Hands-On Cooking” excursions. Travelers will be immersed in regional specialties through activities which may include cooking classes, wine tastings, cheese making, and other adventures, which intertwine the traveler with local farmers, winemakers, artisans and chefs. These intimate, limited trip itineraries are built on the insights, experience, and relationships of local partners who share our passion. Together with these experts we carefully select properties, restaurants, and activities, which represent the true expression of each region, and the Whole Journeys traveler.
Whole Journeys provides specialized, multi-day international and domestic trips for small groups. These active adventures will focus on truly engaging guests with local cultures in ‘through-the-back-door’ experiences. Regional cuisines and the culture of food will be key components, as will face-to-face interactions with producers and artisans. Small groups offer the perfect balance between structure and flexibility, activity and rest, education, personal discovery, food and fun.
