What travelers are saying

"Absolutely amazing two week trip to Mexico. Phoebe was very knowledgeable and helped us plan a fabulous itinerary. The hotels she'd recommended were perfect and in excellent locations. Our guides were helpful, friendly and spoke excellent English and when we contacted the Mexico office to squeeze in another excursion, they were responsive and immediately organised everything. All round brilliant customer service and Mexico was the most interesting and beautiful place to visit! Thank you!"

What travelers are saying

"When I signed up for the Wonders of Costa Rica at a slower pace. The hotel listed in the itinerary for day 8&9 was a 4 star hotel on the beach called the Punta Leona. I'm not sure when but Road Scholar changed the Punta Leona hotel for the 3 star Villa Lapis Jungle hotel. I was shocked when we drove up to this dump. Others in the group wanted to leave and find another hotel. I had black bugs under that shower mat and the shower did not drain, Spiders on the wall and roaches coming out of the cracked in the bathroom. The bed was a thin mattress on a board and was hard as a rock. The food they put out was covered with a wrap but 15 minutes after the plastic wrap was removed it was covered with fruit flies. I passed on the open food bowls. The walls were real thin and the neighbors were real noisy until 11:30 pm. Others in the group complained about the late night noise, spiders and toilet seat being broken. I'm not sure where this place gets 3 stars. After I saw the roaches, I give it a 1 star. Road Scholar put us up in beautiful hotels and then they take us here. You can do better than this Road Scholar. The end the story, Road Scholar customer service called me about my concern and said they have never used the Punta Leona, (I sent her my itinerary that said PUNTA LEONA). She also said they haven't had any complaints about this Villa Lapis dump. After her call, I'm not sure if I'll ever travel with Road Scholar again. Enough said...."

What travelers are saying

"BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep."

"I took the most amazing tour across Portugal and Spain through Bestway Tours last year. It was a 10 day tour visiting historic cities across the countries and was blown away by level of service and convenience the team provided. I've learned so much through the knowledgeable tour guides and enjoyed lots of delicious local food. I cannot wait to take another Bestway Tour in the future!"

What travelers are saying

"We returned from our 13-day East African Explorer trip two weeks ago. The trip fully met our expectations. Everything was well organized, accommodations and food were excellent, safari drives were great. Our driver/guide in Kenya, Gitonga (aka Anderson) was excellent and enthusiastic. Based on our experience I can confidently say we will book another trip with SITA in the near future."

Madagascar Tour Selection Trips

  • Many tours combine both rainforest experiences (in search of lemurs, chameleons, birds, and plant life) and stays at Indian Ocean beaches, a nice mix.
  • Some tours offer stays at lodges featuring both rainforests and beaches in the same location, if you like to unpack just once.
  • Since you’ll  probably fly into the international airport at Antananarivo, consider arriving or departing a day or two before or after your tour to explore the city; most Madagascar tours don’t include it.
  • Seek out tours that offer interactions with the multi-cultural Malagasy people, who are known for their friendliness and hospitality.
  • There is no better time to visit Madagascar, as the impoverished country is making a big push for eco-tourism, improving infrastructure and wildlife habitat.
  • Go soon: Madagascar won’t stay off the beaten trail for long, given its status as a biodiversity hotspot and its multitude of endemic -- and endangered -- species.

Additional details

Is Madagascar Safe?

Madagascar, overall, is safe for travelers but certain precautions should be taken into consideration when visiting here. Madagascar is a developing country and also very poor. Due to this, when visiting major cities, you will see lots of people asking for money. Although this is not necessarily a safety concern, it is something that should be noted.

You should also be careful when wearing or displaying valuable items. There are thieves who target tourists. Always be mindful of your belongings when traveling through busy streets. It should also be noted that when you are taking a guided tour, these issues are always taken into consideration which alleviates the stress of safety.

Madagascar Luxury Tours

Contrary to popular expectations, there are multiple opportunities for both premium tours and luxury tours in Madagascar.

One way to see the rugged, undeveloped landscapes of Madagascar without sacrificing any comfort is by cruise. Free of concerns about running, bugs, and having to unpack multiple times,  a cruise is a great way to explore the island in its entirety.

There are also several tours which stay in high-end, exclusive hotels, with every modern comfort and fantastic views. On these sorts of trips, you are not only guaranteed amazing lodging and meals -- you will also have the chance to fully experience Madagascar. For example, you may go scuba diving in the aqua waters of the Mozambique Channel or the Indian Ocean, or take a river cruise up the Pangalanes Canal.

Volunteering in Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the 12 poorest countries in the world, and first time visitors are usually shocked by this and the country’s environmental conditions. As has become a trend over the years for those visiting Africa, many tourists have questions about giving toys to children in Madagascar. If you are motivated to give back, there are a couple ways you can do so.

Firstly, in regards to giving directly to children, there are pros and cons. While it is one good way to make sure that your gifts reach their target, it is better to think about the long term impact of your gift. Giving colored pens, pencils, and paper is a good way of still giving a “toy”, but inspiring creativity and potentially helping a child in school. Basic goods we take for granted, such as clean socks and simple bulk T-shirts,  will also be greatly appreciated.

There are also several charitable organizations you can donate to that will distribute money in the local community. Some examples of these include the Access Madagascar Initiative, Blue Ventures, and Conservation International.

Madagascar Tours and Safaris

Tours of Madagascar usually have a strong emphasis on its unique and mystifying wildlife which delights tourists and ecologists alike. Madagascar’s points of interest include Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, Isalo National Park, spiny forests, Ranomafana National Park, and scouting lemurs in Anja Reserve. Madagascar has such a rich and diverse terrain making no destination boring.
