Itinerary

Arriving in the Dolomites in Cortina d’Ampezzo, you’ll start with a private taxi ride to Lago di Brais (Pragsersee), a gorgeous lake tucked within massive mountain walls.
Enjoy your first evening on the shores of the lake at the historic Hotel Pragser Wildsee, a landmark inn, built in the late 19th century, and an elegant home for the night.
You’ll start your inn-to-inn trip with an invigorating ascent to a rocky plateau high above the lake. This is the Fanes-Sennes-Brais nature preserve, and you’ll hike with stunning panoramas across a wide, forested valley. Biella hut makes a fine lunch stop, and a continuing traverse brings you to rifugio Sennes, a handsome and comfortable inn with private rooms.
An easy morning traverse brings you to the bucolic Fodora Vedla hut. After a long descent, you’ll climb again, this time to rifugio Fanes, a charming inn tucked into a quiet valley. The nearby rifugio Lavarella is an equally worthy stop for the night.
After another fine morning walk on the high Fanes plateau, we’ll detour slightly from the traditional Alta Via 1 route, descending through a lush valley to the Alta Badia region of the Dolomites, and the lovely small village of San Cassiano, where we’ll catch up to ou...
Leaving San Cassiano, we pass the Capanna Alpina and start hiking up the back side of the Lagazuoi mountain. As we approach the top, you’ll see fascinating remnants of the trench warfare that racked this region during WWI, with tunnels, trenches, and informational pl...
This day is also heavily steeped in WWI history. As you descend from the Lagazuoi, you may take time to visit the fascinating Martini ledge below the hut and the Cinque Torri trenches across the valley.
Rather than stopping at the ski-lift accessible Averau hu...
A final morning hike brings you finally to Cortina d’Ampezzo, but the bustling and lively heart of the region. Cortina has a nice cobblestoned, pedestrian-only core, and is a great place to spend a couple extra days should you have extra time. We’ll unwind and celebrate at the gorgeous 5-star Hotel Cristallo.
Today we say goodbye to the Dolomites and head off for our post-trip destinations. Cortina is well-connected to Venice, a great post-trip getaway.

Accommodation
Cancellations must be received in writing (mail, email, or fax), and are subject to the following fees per person.
More than 90 days before departure – $200 + rail pass fees
61-90 days before departure – $500 + rail pass fees
31-60 days before departure – 50% of tour cost
0-30 days before departure – 100% of tour cost
If you’ve received a rail pass from us, we will ask you to return this unused either to us or to Rail Europe, and this will be refunded to you as well.
Cancelling a trip is no fun, and it’s also very expensive. Many of our clients have to cancel each year for various and unpredictable reasons. To protect yourself in the event that you have to cancel, trip cancellation and travel insurance is highly recommended. While we always try to be fair to our clients who can’t come, we make substantial commitments (to hotels and guides, and by turning people away from sold-out tours) that can’t always be reversed at the last minute. And of course you’ll have flights and pre and post-trip plans to account for also. So don’t forget this important part of your tour.
For US and Canadian residents, I suggest you compare Travel Guard plans and choose among Basic, Silver, Gold or Platinum coverage. Travel Guard has worked well for our tour members for years, and is not that expensive – generally between 3-9% of your tour cost, depending on your age, the cost of your trip, and what kind of plan you get. It’s best to buy insurance within 15 days of your initial deposit, which gives you more comprehensive coverage, and the option to buy “cancel for any reason” coverage.
If you are forced to cancel a trip, you can talk to us about rescheduling, or carrying over a portion of your tour cost to a future tour and we’ll do what we can to help. But every year we have clients who regret that they didn’t get insurance, while nobody ever regrets that they did.
