What's this trip about?

For over a thousand years, the faithful have made the journey across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. The historic town and Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—houses the remains of the Apostle James, said to have brought Christianity to Spain. During the Middle Ages, traveling over the mighty Pyrenees from all over Europe to see such a powerful relic became more than just a spiritual journey; for many, it was the quest of a lifetime.

Tier Pricing

Adventure travel works best with a small group of people. In order to operate these small groups, our trips are priced according to the number of full-price passengers on the trip. (Mountain Travel Sobek staff, trip doctors, and other discounted travelers are excluded from the count for this purpose.) We initially invoice you at the highest tier level price (the smallest group size we can operate). If the price drops due to an increase in group size, you will be refunded the difference.

Prices may vary due to local taxes and trip seasonality. Click "Request Info" to inquire directly with the tour operator for the final trip price.

Check Current Availability, prices, specials with MT Sobek (Mountain Travel Sobek).

The total tour cost includes the tour price (regular or promotional) and the compulsory local payment. The promotional price is subject to change. Check directly with the operator for the latest price offer. The tour operator requires you to pay only the tour price to purchase your travel. The compulsory local payment will be paid when you join the trip. All prices are based on double, twin or triple share occupancy. Solo passengers will be accommodated in a double, twin or triple room according to availability with a passenger(s) of the same gender. Single supplement only needs to be paid if the passenger does not want to share and requests their own room. Discounts can only be applied at the time of booking and cannot be added at a later date, regardless of any changes made to the original booking.

Prices may vary due to local taxes and trip seasonality. Click "Request Info" to inquire directly with the tour operator for the final trip price.

Accommodation

Hotel Les Pyrenees — Saint Jean Pied de Port (France)

Discover Basque Country while staying in the charming town of Saint- Jean-Pied-de-Port, complete with 12th century citadel and 13th century gothic church. The family-run Hotel Les Pyrenees offers warm and inviting accommodations that are simple but contemporary. The grounds are lovely, with a courtyard and and pool, and the gourmet restaurant on the property is not to be missed.

Hotel Monasterio San Zoilo — Carrión de los Condes

Set in a beautiful 10th-century Cluniac monastery, the sophisticated Hotel Monasterio San Zoilo is a short walk from Río Carrión and the 12th-century Iglesia de Santa María del Camino. The individually decorated rooms have been designed to preserve the history of the building, featuring exposed brick and original archways, while offering modern amenities such as free WiFi and TVs. The hotel also boasts a charming bar and a Castilian restaurant.

Hotel Méndez Núñez — Lugo

Tucked inside the Roman walls of the ancient city of Lugo, Hotel Mendez Nuñez offers modern comfort in the midst of the historic city center. Rooms are bright, clean and comfortable, with minimalist décor—which likely won't matter since the bustling heart of Lugo, with its excellent restaurants, bars and attractions, await just outside your door.

Hotel Roncesvalles — Roncesvalles

A welcome respite after walking the Camino de Santiago, Hotel Roncesvalles features well-appointed, modern rooms in a restored medieval monastery that retains much of its original character. Amenities include private bathrooms, TVs, hair dryers and free WiFi. The restaurant offers hearty breakfasts to fuel up trekkers.

Hotel Tres Reyes — Pamplona

Ideally located only a short distance from the city center, the upscale Hotel Tres Reyes is a perfect homebase for those exploring Pamplona. Spacious, modern rooms come equipped with private bathrooms, minibars, LED televisions, telephones, safes, air conditioning and free WiFi. The hotel boasts a bar, cafe, resaturant, swimming pool and fitness center.

NH Collection Palacio de Burgos — Burgos

This elegant hotel, housed in a Gothic church erected in the 16th and 17th centuries, is located in the heart of Burgos. Guests of Palacio de Burgos are only a short walk from the UNESCO-protected Burgos Cathedral as well as many other attractions and restaurants. Modern amenities abound in this historic setting, including a fitness center, sauna, rooftop terrace, breakfast buffet and free WiFi.

Parador Hostal San Marcos de León — León

This spectacular 16th-century building was originally financed by King Ferdinand to serve as the peninsula's western headquarters for the Military Order of Saint James. While it has served many purposes over the centuries, this architectural gem is currently serving as a five-star hotel that seamlessly blends heritage and luxury. Rooms run the gamut from simple elegance to palatial grandeur; the manicured grounds and stately common rooms only add to the experience. Though it may be difficult to tear yourself away from this unique property, curious travelers will be rewarded with local attractions such as the Gothic cathedral, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), quaint neighborhoods and excellent tapas.

Parador de Santiago de Compostela (Hostal dos Reis Católicos) — Santiago de Compostela

Travel back in history with a stay in this grand hotel—originally a royal hospital built in the 15th century—in the center of Obradoiro Square. Meet fellow pilgrims while taking in the bustling activity of the historic plaza just outside your door. The décor is in keeping with the architectural grandeur of the building, but not opulent or ostentatious: four poster beds, brocade linens, warm woods and rich velvets adorn the comfortable rooms. The dining room serves a delicious menu of Galician-style food, although endless culinary delights await outside the hotel, including the foodie haven of Mercado de Abastos de Santiago (Abastos Market).

Parador de Villafranca del Bierzo — Villafranca del Bierzo

Framed by the Ancares Mountains, Parador de Villafranca del Bierzo offers modern accommodations in the El Bierzo district. Its Galician-style exterior, clad in stone and slate, is offset by it lovely flower-filled grounds—which provide unobstructed views of the verdant mountains. The parador also has indoor and outdoor pools and an ice fountain.

Guides
Alberto Mediavilla Serrano Born in Bilbao, Alberto has spent the last 10 years working as guide and operations manager with American hiking groups. He is UIMLA certified mountain leader, has walked the El Camino numerous times, and is has an excellent knowledge of the central area of Spain (Castilla), where his family comes. In the winter, Alberto works as an avalanche rescue instructor, and as an analyst in the mountains of the Picos de Europa. North of the Cantabrian Mountains lies what we refer to as “rainy Spain,” including the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. Our route takes us through these areas, crossing the Pyrenees from north to south into the High Plains of Central Spain, and eventually into Galicia. This means we will likely experience some wet weather along the way. That said, spring and fall are considered the best times to go to this area of Spain. In May, June and October, showers can be expected, but temperatures will vary between 50-70ºF. July – August can be stifling hot, and the walking paths are very crowded. In winter, temperatures will drop significantly, and snow is common.   Erik Perez Erik was born and raised in Asturias, Region of Northern Spain, with the big range of Mountains called Picos de Europa and Cordillera Cantabrica. He is an accomplished climber (climbing Mont Blanc numerous times), backcountry and downhill skier. Erik has been with MTS since 1989 and has received his certification to be a IFMGA/UIAGM guide which is the highest professional award attainable in mountaineering. He has written two guidebooks on hikes and climbs in the Picos de Europa. Erik studied Humanities at the University of Oviedo, Capital city of Asturias and received a Masters degree in History.   Fernando Calvo Fernando holds a Degree in Nursing from the Asturias University Medical School of Oviedo, but found his calling as a mountain guide. He has been guiding our trips in the mountains of Spain since 1996.
