Amsterdam’s Museumplein becomes the heart of the festivities with a spectacular ice rink, a market of many cosy wooden stalls, and festive music. And it’s ideally located to visit on your way to one of the world-famous art museums in this quarter, including Rijksmuseum. Dutch Christmas traditions actually begin in November, when Sinterklaas visits with his helpers to decide whether each child deserves a gift or to be taken to Spain to learn how to behave. Then, on the eve of December 5th, children place their shoes next to the chimney or back door, to find them the next morning filled with traditional sweets such as gingerbread men, marzipan and chocolate.
