What's this trip about?

Fuerteventura is one huge Biosphere Reserve and Starlight Reserve, full of landscapes that bear the marks of its volcanic origin. Nearly half of Lanzarote is also covered in natural reserves, with an impressive volcanic landscape, still hot just below the surface. Both are inhabited by valuable native flora and edged by some of the best beaches in Europe, including Costa Calma and the beautiful island of La Graciosa. A selection of included and optional excursions will allow you to balance time to relax on sandy beaches and time to discover their cultural and natural heritage.

Itinerary

Day 1 London - Fuerteventura - Costa Calma Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Gatwick Airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Fuerteventura. On arrival we transfer to the SBH Taro Beach (4T) in Costa Calma. Day 2 Costa Calma With a pale sandy beach just footsteps away, and a large pool at the hotel, it is easy to relax into your holiday with a day in the sunshine. Day 3 North Fuerteventura Today we explore the far north of Fuerteventura, where we discover fields full of spiky aloe vera, the plant that has offered an amazing array of health benefits for millennia. Legend says that even Cleopatra used this in her daily beauty rituals! We discover the benefits and history of this healing plant in a museum at an aloe vera factory before we visit the Salt Museum, where we learn how salt was traditionally extracted from sea water to supply the island’s kitchens. The original salt fields next to the exhibition are still in operation. We then view the island’s most spectacular natural landscape - the Dunes of Corralejo. The fine, pale and ever shifting sand stretches out for 11km. Day 4 Costa Calma A free day to spend enjoying the beach or the huge Jandía Natural Park, where expanses of rock, dunes, wild coast and scrubland eventually lead to Fuerteventura's highest peak - Jandía. An optional excursion is available to Ajuy and Betancuria, the island’s former capital. Ajuy is a lovely fishing town with fantastic views and geologically fascinating caves, set within rocks created 70 million years ago on the sea floor. Then, in the colonial town of Betancuria, where winding streets are filled with religious buildings and Majorero culture, visit La Casa Santa Maria to see 17th century traditions. The excursion concludes at a museum dedicated to Majorero cheese. Please note: This optional excursion is not suitable for people with walking difficulties. Day 5 Costa Calma - Playa de los Pocillos Today we make our way to Corralejo and board a ferry to Lanzarote. On arrival in Playa Blanca Harbour, we transfer to Seaside Los Jameos Playa (4T) in Playa de los Pocillos and surrounded on two sides by beaches. Day 6 North Lanzarote Teguise is Lanzarote’s old capital, and the oldest Spanish settlement of the archipelago, named after the last princess of the native Guanche inhabitants. Its high position gave the city an ideal defence advantage; however the streets were regularly plundered by pirates. After a little time to enjoy Teguise, we take in some of the island’s most impressive sites, including great views of the Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees and El Mirador del Río, a lookout point with a long abandoned fortress, where we have the opportunity to view La Graciosa, a small island with two villages that marks the southern reach of the Chinijo Archipelago. We then make our way to Los Jameos del Agua, a 6km-long lava tube with beautiful open-air caves that formed around 4,000 years ago, and home to the indigenous blind albino cave crab. On our return we visit the Aloe Museum, prickly pear plantations and Jardín de Cactus, where we can find more than a thousand different species of cacti. Day 7 Playa de los Pocillos Enjoy a day at leisure or take an optional excursion to discover the outstandingly pretty village of Yaiza, visit a famous family winery at La Geria for a tasting and stop at the El Patio, an open-air museum which offers an insight into intriguing, ingenious and unusual agricultural traditions and the resilience of Lanzarote’s farmers after volcanic eruptions compromised fertile land. Then learn about César Manrique, the island’s most famous artist, who has created work displayed all over Lanzarote. Day 8 Playa de los Pocillos Today’s optional excursion offers the opportunity to explore the Fire Mountains, driving amongst volcanoes as you reach Timanfaya National Park. See geothermic demonstrations at Hilario’s Plateau, hear the story of volcanic eruptions and admire the bizarre-shaped cliffs of the Lava Coast, before heading to the tiny seaside village of El Golfo famous for the Green Lagoon, set amongst dramatically weathered rocks. Day 9 Playa de los Pocillos Enjoy a day at leisure in the quiet resort of Playa de los Pocillos, or venture three miles along the promenade to the much larger resort of Puerto del Carmen, where you’ll find lively bars, shops and cafés. Day 10 Playa de los Pocillos Have one last day at leisure or join an optional excursion to the north of the island for a boat to La Graciosa. This quiet, 8km long island has no tarmac roads, just 600 inhabitants, interesting fauna and impressive beaches that are linked to tales of buried treasure. You have free time to explore Caleta del Sebo, the tiny capital of white houses and sandy streets, and its unspoilt surroundings. Day 11 Playa de los Pocillos - Arrecife - London Enjoy a day of relaxation before we transfer to the airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to London Gatwick Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
