Visits

La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio National Park, Monteverde

Highlights

  • Try to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal when you’re exploring Monteverde’s steamy cloud forests. Better yet, why not consider a jungle zip-line to get high in the sky for the best views?
  • Spend time wandering through the Mercado Municipal de Artesanias artisan stalls in San Jose – Costa Rica’s cultural heart. With plenty of time to stop for a refresco (smoothie), this is a good opportunity to people-watch.
  • Lend a hand at a farmstay outside of Santa Rosa de Pocosol and learn some home-cooked recipes and techniques from the locals on a visit to the Juanilama agricultural community.
  • Marvel at the size and stature of the Arenal Volcano on the horizon, maybe taking a soak and relaxing in La Fortuna’s lava-heated thermal springs.
  • With plenty of time to chill out at your own pace, Quepos’ surf vibe is ideal for catching some waves, lazing on the white-sand beaches or hiking the lush trails of Manuel Antonio with your travel pals.

What travelers are saying

"Thank you for reaching out! This trip was absolutely phenomenal—truly the best 10 days of my life. I’m incredibly grateful for everything you arranged. Cindy, in particular, took such good care of me. It felt like she was supporting me around the clock, and I really appreciate her dedication. I’m already eager to recommend your services to my friends and colleagues. On top of that, I realized how much I love the South Island—I’m hoping to visit Queenstown and Mount Cook National Park next, perhaps while participating in some business-related community events. I’d be thrilled if your company could help me plan that trip as well. Thank you again for everything. I look forward to traveling with you in the future!"

Manuel Antonio National Park Tour Selection Trips

  • The Park is closed on Mondays, and opening hours on all other days are between 7am-4pm. Keep this in mind when planning your other activities, though if you are on a tour your guide will know this type of information and be able to plan for you.
  • Entrance fees to the park is $16, although children under 12 enter free. If you are on a guided tour, your guide will have already purchased these tickets. If you have some free time, and want to invest in a private tour, they are available for $71 for adults and $55 for children.
  • Decide whether or not you are more interested in beach activities or scouring the jungle for tropical animals. If you want to snorkel and swim by the beach, choose a tour that guarantees a lot of free time.

Additional details

Manuel Antonio National Park Facts

  • The park was discovered by the Spanish Explorer Ponce de Léon in 1519. He is best known for his futile search for the Fountain of Youth, but at least he found the second best thing: Manuel Antonio!
  • Manuel Antonio is the smallest of Costa Rica’s 161 national parks. Despite this, it welcomes 150,000 visitors per year, making it one of the most popular.
  • The park was created after the local community pressured its government to put the land under protection from encroaching foreign businesses.
  • The park is named after a conquistador who is buried there.
  • Most of the time, the park is referred to as a combination of lowland rainforest and beach habitats. However, the park also has a mangrove estuary.
  • You can surf at Manuel Antonio National Park! The best surfing is a couple miles south and north of the main beach, Playa Manuel Antonio.

Weather in Manuel Antonio National Park

You can expect the park to be warm no matter the time you visit, temperatures average in the low-to-mid 80’s (high 20’s Celsius) year round. As is the case in most of Costa Rica, packing a poncho is never a bad idea because there is always a slight chance of rain. You can expect the most rain, however, in August through October. January through February are the driest months in Manuel Antonio.

Manuel Antonio National Park Animals

  • Some of the animal highlights in Manuel Antonio National Park include:
  • Two and three-toed sloths
  • Iguanas
  • Pacific land crabs
  • White-faced monkeys
  • Squirrel monkeys
  • Howler monkeys
  • Coatimundis
  • Raccoons
  • Chestnut-mandibled toucan
  • Pelicans
  • Magnificent frigatebird
  • Mangrove hummingbird
  • Basilisk lizards
  • Red-eyed tree frogs
  • Parrot snakes

Crocodile Bridge

Also, if you want to get a look at some crocodiles, one the best spots to do so is the nearby “Crocodile Bridge.” This bridge, which runs over the Tarcoles River, is known for the unusual number of large crocodiles which gather there. Locals suggest that the crocodiles are able to get so large because they feed on any unlucky cows that wade too deep into the water.

Over the year, the bridge has become a well known tourist attraction, with plenty of restaurants nearby. We recommend grabbing a freshly cut coconut and having a drink while you enjoy (or at least, try to enjoy) the view.
