What's this trip about?

East of Lisbon, across the Tagus River, sprawls Alentejo, one of Portugal’s largest regions. Overshadowed by its more famous neighbours to the north and south (the Douro and the Algarve), Alentejo is in fact the breadbasket of the country, and in many ways its culinary and cultural heartland, where sleepy villages dot a landscape of farmland, cork forests, olive groves, vineyards, and sinewy man-made lakes. The fact that it also offers superb cycling is a bonus, and we’ll use our bikes to explore its myriad aspects, from the placid waters of dammed Lake Maranhão to the cobbled streets of UNESCO-recognized Evora. In the late 20th century, when B&R first offered biking here, it was still somewhat rough around the edges, befitting its history as desolate frontier territory. Two decades later, we are thrilled to find the region refined and welcoming with a lingering touch of rustic, and we invite you to come (re)discover it with us!

Travel Map

Day 1:

Rendezvous in Lisbon and cross the bridge toward Alentejo. Begin your mid-morning ride from Estremoz to a private lunch, hosted by our friend Jaquim dos Loites. Cycle back to the hotel and spend the evening enjoying this beautiful property.

Day 2:

Enjoy a guided tour of Monsaraz—one of the most stunning villages in Portugal. After lunch and a wine tasting at the impressive winery Monte dos Perdigoes, visit the town of El Corval for a private pottery lesson by the ceramist Rui Patalim.

Day 3:

Ride from Monsaraz to Evora, where you'll be surrounded by vineyards. Our local guide will lead us on an intro tour, touching on Evora’s history, important monuments, and one of the oldest university in Europe!

Day 4:

Embark on a delightful morning ride through the countryside to our friend Nuno’s family estate to learn the intricacies of cork farming (they happen to create great wines and olive oils as well!). Enjoy the beauties of Canto Alentejano before dinner in Evora.

Day 5:

Enjoy the perfumed air of the Alentejano countryside on your final ride which culminates at the infamous Manuel Azinheirinha restaurant in Santiago do Escoural. Dinner this evening is served in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant.

Day 5:

We’ll depart the hotel this morning for Lisbon airport. For travellers wishing to stay on in the capital, taxis are readily available for the short drive into the city centre.

Accommodation

Signature

We use premium hotels that are unique expressions of the region. Often they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle, but in every case they offer an exceptionally comfortable stay.

  • São Lourenço do Barrocal: In the same family for over 200 years, the estate has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient oaks, olive groves and vineyards. Here, the feeling of being at home is intimately connected with the sense of belonging to the vastness of the land. In Alentejo, farm and landscape soon become your home.
  • Convento do Espinheiro, Evora: Housed in a stunning ex-monastery named for a hawthorn bush, Espinheiro leaves guests wanting for nothing. Its hallowed walls harbour two swimming pools, a spa, spacious and comfortable common areas, and rooms with views of olive groves and gardens. The fully consecrated church just off reception may not be of practical use to us, but it is a wonder to behold.
  • L'AND Resort, Montemor-o-Novo: A cluster of avant-garde buildings nestled among the vines, L’AND delivers comfort and service of the highest calibre. If there’s a chill in the evening air – or even if there is not! – ask the concierge to prepare a fire in your personal fireplace on the terrace of your suite.
