DAY 1 - LONDON TO NEW YORK New York We fly from London to New York, for three nights at the Waldorf Astoria. DAY 2 - SIGHTSEEING IN NEW YORK Statue of Liberty On Day 2 we take a sightseeing tour of 'the Big Apple'. taking in highlights such as Fifth Avenue and Central Park, before our cruise around Manhattan harbour. We have lunch on board as we spot landmarks including Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. DAY 3 - AT LEISURE IN NEW YORK Times Square, New York Day 3 is then at leisure; with its global influence on entertainment, New York offers something for everyone. DAYS 4-5 - NEW YORK TO WASHINGTON DC Washington DC Today we take the train to Washington D.C, the nation's capital. We enjoy a sightseeing tour of its iconic buildings including the White House, the Pentagon and Capitol Hill. Later we transfer to our hotel for two nights. Day 5 is at leisure for you to explore the political powerhouse. DAY 6 - THROUGH THE MIDWEST TO CHICAGO Capitol Limited We leave Washington on the Capitol Limited sleeper service to Chicago. DAY 7 - EXPLORING CHICAGO Chicago After arrival in Chicago, we take a tour of 'the Windy City', including the Little Italy neighbourhood. This afternoon we cruise on Lake Michigan, enjoying lunch on board as we admire Chicago's skyline from the sparkling waters. We spend tonight at the Intercontinental Hotel, on Chicago's 'Magnificent Mile' where your evening is free. DAY 8 - CHICAGO TO DENVER California Zephyr On Day 8 we take breakfast high above Chicago at 360 Chicago, formerly the Hancock Tower, and join the overnight California Zephyr to Denver. DAY 9 - DENVER Denver State Capitol Today we arrive in Denver, nicknamed the 'Mile High City' as it is exactly a mile above sea level. We take an orientation drive of the city, flanked by majestic mountain peaks, before arriving at the Brown Palace Hotel & Spa for a two-night stay. DAY 10 - ROYAL GORGE RAILROAD Royal Gorge Railroad On Day 10 we take an excursion on the Royal Gorge Railroad. Travelling in restored 1950s carriages, we embark on a journey through the stunning Royal Gorge, enjoying lunch on board as we head alongside the wild Arkansas River. DAY 11 - THROUGH THE ROCKIES Rocky Mountain National Park We follow the route of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad - regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the States - into the Rocky Mountains. We arrive in Grand Junction for an overnight stay, and enjoy dinner at the popular Rockslide Brewery. DAY 12 - THE DURANGO & SILVERTON RAILROAD Durango & Silverton Railroad On Day 12 we board the Durango & Silverton Railroad travelling through canyons, forests and the pretty Aminas Valley to Durango. DAY 13 - MONUMENT VALLEY Monument Valley Today's journey takes us through Monument Valley, one of the USA's truly legendary locations. Later we arrive in Flagstaff for two nights at the Little America Hotel. DAY 14 - AT LEISURE IN FLAGSTAFF Flagstaff Today is free for you to relax in Flagstaff, or maybe explore the hotel's private 500-acre pine forest, nestled at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks. DAY 15 - THE GRAND CANYON RAILWAY The Grand Canyon On today's excursion we join the heritage Grand Canyon Railroad in Williams for a wonderful journey to the Grand Canyon, one of the world's most awe-inspiring sights. Formed over millions of years, the Canyon is up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep in places. We arrive at the South Rim to absorb the dramatic vistas, before taking a flight over this natural wonder - a fantastic way to admire its huge scale. Later we join the Southwest Chief Sleeper service to Los Angeles. DAYS 16-18 - LOS ANGELES AND SAN FRANCISCO RMS Queen Mary, Long Beach Arriving in Los Angeles, today we discover the lively city and the 'dream factory' of Hollywood on a guided tour. We then transfer to our base for tonight, the RMS Queen Mary, a former U-boat dodging ocean liner. This evening we enjoy dinner in the ship's glamorous Sir Winston restaurant. On Day 17 we board the iconic Coast Starlight for a journey along the Pacific coast shoreline to San Francisco. Enjoy spectacular views of golden beaches through the full-length windows. In San Francisco we transfer to the elegant Fairmont Hotel on Fisherman's Wharf. On Day 18 we take a tour of San Francisco, admiring landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge. DAY 19 – AT LEISURE San Francisco Today is free for you to continue exploring. Perhaps visit the infamous prison island of Alcatraz or explore the vibrant streets of Chinatown. Tonight we mark our final evening in the USA in style, with a farewell dinner cruise around San Francisco Bay. DAYS 20-21 - SAN FRANCISCO TO SHANGHAI Fly to Shanghai Today you have the option to fly from San Francisco to Shanghai arriving on Day 21, otherwise you may choose to return to London. DAYS 22-25 - SHANGHAI AND HANGZHOU Shanghai Arriving in Shanghai on Day 21. We spend the next three nights at the Grand Mercure Central. On Day 22 we embark on an introductory tour of Shanghai, beginning at the Shanghai Museum, a dynamic city where traditional markets and futuristic skyscrapers stand side by side. Dinner tonight is served at the hotel. We discover more with a city tour of Day 23 where highlights include Yu Garden, the French Concession and the Xintiandi district. On Day 24 we leave Shanghai and make the short journey by train to Hangzhou, a city celebrated throughout China for its natural beauty. We spend two nights here at the Courtyard by Marriott by Wulin Hotel and after checking in you are free to begin exploring. We embark on a guided tour on Day 25 taking in the Lingyin Temple and enjoying a cruise across West Lake. DAYS 26-28 - GUILIN AND ZHENGZHOU Guilin We take an internal flight to Guilin today where we check into the Park Hotel for two nights ahead of a cruise down the spellbinding River Li on Day 27. On Day 28 we join the high-speed rail service northwards through rural China to Zhengzhou where we overnight. DAY 29 - THE LONGMEN GROTTOES Customers We journey to Luoyang on Day 29 to visit the UNESCO listed Longmen Grottoes, a site where over 100,000 images of Buddha have been hand carved into the cave's limestone walls, before continuing to Xian for two nights at the Grand Mercure Hotel. DAYS 30-31 - THE TERRACOTTA WARRIORS Terracotta Warriors Today we visit the superb Terracotta Warriors. Built as a replica of the first Emperor of China's army, the 6,000 life-sized statues were designed to protect him in death. After time to explore, we enjoy a tour of Xian's ancient landmarks such as the city walls, the Grand Mosque and Muslim Street. Tonight we enjoy a special dumpling banquet. On Day 31 we take the high-speed train to Beijing, for four nights at the Novotel Peace Hotel. DAY 32 - DISCOVERING BEIJING The Great Wall On Day 32 we visit Beijing, and discover this fascinating city on a sightseeing tour, beginning at Tiananmen Square, the political heart of the city. Surrounding the square are reminders of China's communist power, and Imperial rule. We continue into the neighbouring Forbidden City, the Emperor's seat for around 600 years, and a stunning and vast complex of wooden imperial palace buildings, which according to folklore, consists of 9,999 rooms. DAYS 33-35 - SIGHTSEEING IN BEIJING & ON TO MONGOLIA Tiananmen Gate We travel to Mutianyu to visit the majestic Great Wall of China on Day 33. Stretching from the Gobi Desert to the Korean border, the Great Wall is a genuine relic of dynastic China's proud history. We ascend onto the Great Wall by chair lift, enabling us to closely admire this magnificent structure, as well as the stunning mountain terrain. On Day 34 we have ample time to further explore Beijing with a full-day at leisure. On Day 35 you can transfer to the airport for the journey back to London (see pages 138-139), or continue your epic adventure. We travel by sleeper train through the great steppes of the Gobi Desert arriving at the Mongolian border on Day 36. DAYS 36-37 - ULAANBAATAR & THE MONGOLIAN ALPS Mongolian Yurt We join the elegant Tsar's Gold Private Train for the incredible journey to Moscow on Day 36. We arrive on Day 37 at the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. We enjoy a guided tour of the city, which takes us past sights including the Lama Museum and the Choijn Lama Temple. DAY 38 - GANDAN MONASTERY Ulan Ude, Lenin Statue We visit the Tibetan-style Buddhist Gandan Monastery on Day 38. We then enjoy an excursion into the heart of 'Mongolian Switzerland'. We experience a traditional lunch in a tent settlement populated by nomadic herdsmen and enjoy a horse-riding show before returning to the train. DAY 39 - ULAN UDE Lake Baikal Arriving in Russia, we reach Ulan Ude, where we enjoy a city tour. DAY 40 - LAKE BAIKAL Irkutsk Cathedral On Day 40 we take the bus to a typical Siberian village before continuing to Lake Baikal, the world's largest freshwater lake. We travel on a private line directly on the lakefront, before enjoying a boat ride on the vast waters. Later (weather permitting) we stop for a local picnic dinner on the shore. DAYS 41-42 - IRKUTSK AND NOVOSIBIRSK Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Novosibersk We arrive in the city of Irkutsk, which we explore on a guided tour. We spend tonight at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Irkutsk, then re-join the train on Day 42 and make our way across Siberia, arriving in Novosibirsk on Day 43. DAY 43 - NOVOSIBIRSK Yekaterinburg Upon arrival, we receive a traditional Russian welcome with bread and salt, and take a guided tour including Russia's largest Opera House and the iconic Trans-Siberian Monument. DAY 44 - YEKATERINBURG Kazan Cathedral Today we arrive in Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Ural Mountains. During a city tour we visit the Cathedral on the Blood, a memorial built on the site where the Imperial Romanov family were murdered in 1918. DAY 45-47 - KAZAN TO MOSCOW Red Square Crossing the Asia- Europe divide, on Day 45 we reach Kazan, where we learn about its past on a guided tour of its magnificent Kremlin. On Day 46 we arrive in Moscow, the captivating Russian capital, where we disembark the Tsar's Gold and spend two nights at the InterContinental Tverskaya Hotel. We explore the city on a panoramic tour, seeing the illuminated sights as darkness falls. We cross the vast Red Square and experience the artistic treasures of Moscow's metro system, enjoying a magnificent tour of the Kremlin, the city's iconic walled citadel on Day 47. DAY 48 - ARRIVAL IN VENICE On Day 48 we head to Moscow's International Airport for the flight to Venice, Italy where we transfer to our hotel via a private water taxi. DAYS 49-51 - THE VENICE-SIMPLON ORIENT EXPRESS The Venice-Simplon Orient Express Today we enjoy a guided tour of the Floating City. On the morning of Day 50 we join the world-famous The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Relax and watch the stunning scenery as we eventually pull into Paris after breakfast on Day 51. From here we continue by rail to Calais, enjoying brunch on board. Emerging from the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone, we board the steam-hauled Belmond British Pullman for the final leg of our epic adventure. Our journey of almost 23,000 miles around the globe then concludes in style as we pull into London Victoria station
