What's this trip about?

Starting from Lisbon and ending in Porto – Portugal’s two major hubs – we cycle from one idyllic medieval village to the next, along the way enjoying rural scenes and wild landscapes well off the beaten path. We will be challenged by some hilly terrain though always plentifully rewarded with quintessential Iberian wining & dining! Complemented with cozy accommodations and unique experiences, including a train ride and boat cruise in the Douro Valley, this is an epic Portugal cycling adventure designed for the discerning traveler. The journey begins with a pick up from Lisbon and a transfer inland to the eastern fringes of central Portugal. We’ll waste no time digging into medieval history at Idanha-a-Nova and then spend the following days cycling to further historic villages nestled in the ruggedly beautiful countryside. Highlights include the village of Monsanto, where houses are built along giant boulders, and the hilltop fortress of Castelo Rodrigo, with its cobblestone streets weaving through the remains of a once glorious castle. We will also be riding through the secluded national parks of Serra da Malcata and Douro International Natural Park, where plateaus, valleys, and escarpments provide stunning vistas and a chance to spot wildlife. The final days of the tour are focused on the picturesque Douro Valley, renowned for its terraced vineyards carved into rolling, sun-kissed hills. We’ll enjoy these scenes via bike, train and boat for a truly enchanting finale to the adventure! You’ll be dropped off in Porto by river cruise where you can explore this vibrant coastal city before traveling onwards. Join us on this captivating journey through Portugal's storied inland - the perfect way to connect Lisbon and Porto for those who love to cycle!

Day 1

In the early afternoon we pick you up from your hotels in Lisbon and, as a group, transfer 3-hours inland to Idanha-a-Nova. We have a bike fitting, a stroll through the historic town, and a welcome dinner.

Day 2

We enjoy our first taste of rural riding along quiet back-country roads passing by a scenic reservoir, endless farmland, and several historic villages. A highlight is the village of Monsanto with its houses built alongside giant boulders.

Day 3

Today we ride through the Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve, home of the Iberian lynx. We are surrounded by Old World Mediterranean forest and expansive views. We end in Rapoula do Côa, renowned for its thermal springs.

Day 4

The ride today is through the scenic Côa Valley, where the hills are crowned with picturesque medieval fortresses and the quaint villages nestled within. Amongst the most impressive is Almeida Castle, boasting imposing gates and star-shaped defensive walls.

Day 5

A thrilling day of traversing plateaus, escarpments and valleys along the border with Spain. Views of the rugged terrain abound and we may spot some birds of prey soaring in the sky before rolling into the historic town of Freixo de Espada à Cinta.

Day 6

Today’s ride begins with our last impressions of the wild landscapes of the eastern fringes and ends with an introduction to the carefully manicured vineyard-draped hills of the Douro Valley. A highlight of the day is a scenic train ride from Pocinho to Peso da Régua.

Day 7

Starting from our hotel in Régua we ride along the Douro River and up into the surrounding hillscape of terraced vineyards. Along the way we visit the city of Lamego, famous for its baroque-era church perched atop a hill with a massive and intricate stairway leading up to it.

Day 8

We end our journey by enjoying a boat cruise down the Douro River to Porto. Cruising time is around 6 hours and includes lunch on board. The views of the river and surrounding terraced vineyards are simply stunning. Once in Porto, we’ll transfer you from the pier to your hotels.
