What's this trip about?

The Mae Hong Son Loop is one of Thailand’s most iconic road biking challenges. Starting and ending in Chiang Mai, this tour takes you to some of the tallest mountain peaks in Thailand, featuring spectacular winding roads that offer tough yet rewarding climbs and exhilarating descents. The route meanders through jungle-clad hillscapes and farmlands cultivated by various highland cultures, including the Karen and Shan. As you put your legs to the test, feast your eyes on breathtaking panoramas from viewpoints, the tranquil sight of Buddhist temples, and the warm smiles of curious locals eager to cheer you on!After meeting and warming up, we kick things off by riding a section of the Samoeng Loop, one of Chiang Mai’s classic road cycling routes in the mountains that surround the city. Following a ride through the rice fields in the Mae Rim Valley, we venture further west into the rugged mountains of Mae Hong Son Province where we descend into Pai, Thailand’s hippy town. From there, we conquer the famed Doi Kiew Lom Climb and trace the undulating contours of the densely forested Shan Hills. After a night spent at a riverside hotel in Mae Sariang, we tackle the tour's queen stage, gaining nearly 3,000 metres over 130 km to the base of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s tallest peak. Standing at 2,565 metres above sea level, the 30 km winding ascent to the top of the “Roof of Thailand” serves as our grand finale, after which we transfer back to Chiang Mai.Join us in conquering the Mae Hong Son Loop and earn your place in Thailand’s road biking hall of fame!

Travel Map

Day 1

We meet in the early afternoon and head out for a relaxed warm-up ride in the outskirts of Chiang Mai. In the evening we reconvene for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

We kick off our adventure by cycling a section of the Samoeng Loop, one of Chiang Mai’s most iconic road cycling routes, celebrated for its serene, winding roads flanked by lush jungle foliage.

Day 3

We start with a flat warm-up in Mae Rim Valley before tackling three winding climbs, taking us deeper into the highlands of northern Thailand. We are welcomed into Mae Hong Son Province with a long and technical descent into the lively town of Pai where we spend the night.

Day 4

Early in the ride, we conquer the iconic Doi Kiew Lom Climb. After a thrilling descent, we cycle through the Shan Hills, rising and falling with the contours of the terrain, before arriving at the quaint provincial capital of Mae Hong Son.

Day 5

A gentler day awaits as we head further south. After a short but spicy climb to a gorgeous viewpoint, we ride through the forested hills of Namtok Mae Surin National Park, enjoying a nature-filled day of cycling before arriving in the small town of Khun Yuam.

Day 6

We cycle from one small highland town to another, following a scenic stretch of backcountry roads across rolling hills, surrounded by jungles, agricultural fields, mountain views, and small villages. At the end of the day, we unwind at a riverside hotel in Mae Sariang.

Day 7

Our toughest day awaits! We start with a challenging 15 km climb, followed by a winding stretch of road through lush jungly hill crests. After a thrilling descent and one final short climb, we’ll arrive in the rolling hills of Mae Chaem District, where we spend the night.

Day 8

We ride to the top of Thailand’s tallest mountain, Doi Inthanon, via a 30 km climb featuring long uphill drags, steep ramps, zigzagging switchbacks, and tight hairpins. This impressive ascent is a fitting finale to the tour, sure to be celebrated with a farewell dinner tonight!

Day 9

Our tour has ended. Extend your stay in Chiang Mai, explore other parts of Thailand, or head to the airport for your flight home.
