Itinerary

The tour starts at around noon in Cairns, where we’ll familiarise ourselves with many of the tropical species that live in town. We’ll visit parks near the Botanical Gardens in search of Bush Thick-knees, Rainbow Bee-eaters, Australian Swiftlets, and a variety of hone...
We’ll start early with a pre-breakfast boat trip on the Daintree River, which is likely to be one of the highlights of the trip for some, especially avid photographers. Waterbirds are numerous and tame and should include Australasian Darter, Rufous Night-Heron, Papuan...
Before breakfast we’ll do some more birdwatching around the lodge, where Black-faced and Spectacled Monarchs should be easy to find and if we’re lucky a Noisy Pitta might show itself. After breakfast we’ll drive into the dry eucalyptus country to the northwest in sear...
The rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands are rich in birds, many of which will be new for us. Our day will be broken into sections, providing all-day birding for those who wish or a chance to opt out occasionally to relax and perhaps explore the picturesque town of ...
Our pre-breakfast excursion today will be to a nearby local reservoir, and if there has been rain or heavy dew overnight, we’ll watch the shoulders of the road for Buff-banded Rail and Brown Quail en route. The jaunty song of White-throated Gerygone may reveal its pre...
We’ll leave Cairns early and drive up into the nearby hills, escaping the humidity once again and spending much of the day at Cassowary House and in the surrounding rainforest. Our main target is the much-hoped-for Southern Cassowary, one or two of which usually visit...
Today will be a total contrast to the previous five, dominated as they were by rainforest birding (albeit fairly easy stuff with lots of showy birds): we’ll join one of the tourist boats on a cruise out of Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef—allegedly the only living str...
We’ll catch an early morning flight to Brisbane. Remarkably, despite spending two hours in the air flying south, when we land we will still be in Queensland—such is the size of this vast state. Our first stop will be in coastal mangroves, where we’ll search for Mangro...
O’Reilly’s Guesthouse is celebrated by birdwatchers worldwide for its amazing shows of multicoloured tropical species, many of which are hand-tame and present fantastic photographic opportunities. Species that frequent the guesthouse feeders include bizarre Australian...
After an early morning at O’Reilly’s searching for any species still missing—more than likely Albert’s Lyrebird—we’ll drive to Coolangatta and catch an afternoon flight to Sydney, stopping to look for species more typical of the drier lower slopes such as Red-browed T...
The destination for today will be left flexible so we can make use of up-to-date information provided by our local leader, but it is sure to include time spent searching for Superb Lyrebird, one of the world’s most accomplished mimics. We’ll also look for a wide cross...
Today we’ll take a pelagic trip into deep water beyond the continental shelf. We’ll cruise out through Sydney Harbor and have a view of the famous bridge with a glimpse of the opera house below. During our day-long trip we should see many Southern Hemisphere seabirds ...
On the last morning there will be a choice of either sightseeing in Sydney (on your own) or some final birding in Sydney Royal National Park, where we might see New South Wales’s only endemic bird, the Rock Warbler, as well as heathland specialities such as Southern E...

International Flight Costs:
Sunbird is happy to book international flights for you. However, we do not hide the flight cost in the main tour price. Flight costs vary dramatically and when pricing tours - sometimes up to 18 months before departure - it is often impossible to obtain an accurate price for the flights. Instead we show the flight cost as a separate amount which is our best estimate at the time we post the tour price on our website. When we come to invoice you for the tour we include the amount the flights actually cost us to buy. We think this is a much fairer system as it means any saving we get is passed on to you. Many companies include the price of the flights in their main tour cost which means you are unlikely to benefit if they obtain flights at a price lower than originally estimated
Payments:
Payment of the balance of the tour cost is due upon receipt of our invoice. We will normally* send you an invoice about three months before departure. If payment has not been received by 70 days before departure we reserve the right to treat the booking as cancelled and charge the appropriate cancellation fees. At present we do not accept payment by debit or credit cards. Payments can be made by cheque or bank transfer. Details for a bank transfer will be added to the final invoice.
Check Current Availability, prices, specials with Sunbird Tours.
The total tour cost includes the tour price (regular or promotional) and the compulsory local payment. The promotional price is subject to change. Check directly with the operator for the latest price offer. The tour operator requires you to pay only the tour price to purchase your travel. The compulsory local payment will be paid when you join the trip. All prices are based on double, twin or triple share occupancy. Solo passengers will be accommodated in a double, twin or triple room according to availability with a passenger(s) of the same gender. Single supplement only needs to be paid if the passenger does not want to share and requests their own room. Discounts can only be applied at the time of booking and cannot be added at a later date, regardless of any changes made to the original booking.
Prices may vary due to local taxes and trip seasonality. Click "Request Info" to inquire directly with the tour operator for the final trip price.

ACCOMMODATION
Throughout the tour we’ll be staying in good quality hotels and lodges, most of which have private bathroom facilities in every room (but see below). Our hotels will vary from fairly basic motels in out of the way small country towns, to international airport hotels in Sydney. Almost all Australian hotels provide fridges in the room, tea and coffee making facilities and hair dryers. They also have self-service laundry rooms. AUSTRALIA: Tour Information...3 Some of the larger hotels have a laundry service as well. In a couple of places accommodation is limited and we stay in cottages that contain two private bedrooms and one shared bathroom (per cottage). We always try to put two people in one of the bedrooms and one in the other, so that there are only three people sharing each bathroom. This is only likely to occur during our one night at Kingfisher Lodge.
We reserve the right to cancel any tour or tour extension for which there are insufficient reservations - normally 70 days before the departure date but sometimes longer. Please note that, although unlikely, this could occur after the final invoices have been sent out if the tour is running on small numbers and if someone cancels just before the 70-day deadline. In case of cancellation, all deposits and other payments will be refunded. Please also note that the cancellation of a tour’s pre-tour or post-tour extension does not alter your rights or obligations with respect to the main portion of the same tour.
