What's this trip about?

Autumn is the ideal time of year to explore New England, when the air is crisp and cool and the glorious fall foliage is on display in its varying hues of russet, ochre and gold. Travelling through five states, this splendid tour will take you on a journey through American colonial history, from the urbane charm of Boston to picture-postcard mountain towns and battle sites which saw the beginnings of the War of Independence. You’ll visit Cape Cod, stronghold of the Kennedys, Newport, with its opulent ‘Gilded Age’ mansions and the appealing college town of Burlington in Vermont. You’ll also explore the wild natural beauty of the White Mountains in New Hampshire and there will be plenty of opportunities to taste the wonderful fresh cuisine for which this region is famous.

On arrival our coach will transfer us to our hotel, the Boston Marriott Copley Place (4T). Day 2 Boston This morning we will enjoy a city tour of Boston with a local guide, taking in highlights such as the site of the Boston Tea Party, Back Bay and Beacon Hill, ending at Quincy Market. You are free to explore at leisure for the rest of the day. Day 3 Boston - Hyannis We leave Boston early this morning and head south, towards Cape Cod. An optional excursion is available to Plimoth Plantation, alternatively spend your free time visiting the Pilgrim Hall Museum and walking around the village of Plymouth. We arrive in Hyannis later this afternoon and check into our hotel for the next two nights, the Hyannis Harbor Hotel (3T). Day 4 Provincetown Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod, is a small beach resort with a thriving artistic community. See historical villages and sandy beaches along Route 6A, as we travel along Cape Cod’s most scenic byway, and view areas of Cape Cod National Seashore including the great dunes of the Province lands, windmills, lighthouses and sea captains’ homes. In town, you can explore options such as MacMillan Wharf, the Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum, art galleries and much more. Day 5 Hyannis - Newport - Mystic We leave Hyannis this morning, crossing into Rhode Island and making a stop in Newport, where you will have free time. The city is famous for its grand mansions from the ‘Gilded Age’ of the late 19th century, and you can choose an optional visit to The Breakers, one of the most extravagant of these summer homes, built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II. We arrive in Mystic, where there will be time to explore Mystic Seaport, before continuing to the Hampton Inn & Suites (3T). Day 6 Mystic - Pittsfield Leaving Mystic this morning, we stop at locations to try and capture views of the spectacular fall foliage of the surrounding forest and later continue to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, which houses the world’s largest collection of Rockwell’s paintings and illustrations. We reach Pittsfield early this evening, and our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn Lenox Pittsfield (4T). Day 7 Pittsfield - Woodstock - Burlington Today promises to be a scenic feast as we travel through the beautiful landscapes of Vermont with stops at Old Bennington to see its 200-year old church, and the charming town of Woodstock. We arrive at our hotel in Burlington, the Hampton Inn (3T), early this evening. Day 8 Burlington This morning we have a walking tour of Burlington, an attractive college town filled with historic buildings and plenty of green spaces. The rest of the day is free, with an optional tour to the pretty mountain village of Stowe, reached by gondola, another possibility this afternoon. Day 9 Burlington - Montpelier - North Conway Our first stop after leaving Burlington today will be Morse Farm, where the Morse family have been producing maple syrup for generations. There will be a chance to taste and buy their products before we travel on to the state capital, Montpelier for a tour of the grand Vermont State House. We arrive in North Conway this evening and check in to our hotel for the next two nights, the North Conway Grand (3T+). Day 10 Flume Gorge Enjoy a presentation that takes an ecological look at the surrounding area, before travelling to the wonderful White Mountains region of New Hampshire, visiting Flume Gorge, in Franconia Notch State Park. This spectacular natural chasm stretches for 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty and can be explored along a wooden walkway. Then we make our way to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway where we take the cable car to the 4,080-ft summit of Cannon Mountain, where on a clear day you can see the mountains of four states and Canada. At the summit, you’ll find spectacular views from the observation deck. We return to the hotel this afternoon. Please note: The presentation & Cannon Mountain are included in 2019 only. Day 11 North Conway - Ogunquit Leaving North Conway we make our way to Ogunquit in Maine - known as the beautiful place by the sea - stopping for lunch along the way. We arrive late this afternoon, spending our last night in New England at the Meadowmere Resort (3T). The hotel is just a short walk from town which is home to many restaurants, cafes and bars and you will have time this afternoon to visit the sandy beach, take the Marginal Walk cliff walk or simply relax and enjoy your hotel facilities.
