What's this trip about?

Winston Churchill once suggested that ‘the Balkans produce more history than they can consume’. The extraordinary historical significance that this implies is fascinatingly evident throughout this superb itinerary, which takes in myriad highlights of Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro - culminating in the beautiful Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Remnants of empires past are revealed in Zagreb, Sarajevo and Belgrade, and there is time to explore charming centuries-old monasteries and picturesque medieval towns. Yet the Balkans are also renowned for their wild beauty and our tour invites appreciation of breathtaking landscapes ornamented with dramatic mountains and tranquil lakes.

Itinerary

Day 1 London - Zagreb Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Heathrow Airport and your direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Zagreb. On arrival our coach transfers you to the Sheraton Zagreb (5T), our base for our first two nights. Dinner is included here tonight. Day 2 Zagreb After breakfast, we take a sightseeing tour of this stunning and historical capital city with a local guide. The tour includes the Upper Town, the historical centre of the city, the Church of St Mark with its famed multi-coloured tiled roof, the Cathedral and Croatian National Theatre. We will pass by the beautiful Mirogoj Cemetery. We take dinner in a local restaurant. Day 3 Zagreb - Belgrade Our scenic journey today takes us from Croatia to Belgrade, Serbia. Our hotel for two nights is the Hyatt (5T) or Hotel Zlatnik (5T). Dinner is included at a local restaurant. Day 4 Belgrade Today, our full-day sightseeing tour of Belgrade introduces us to the most important sights of the city. On foot we will visit the biggest park in Belgrade, Kalemegdan, which encompasses Kalemegdan Fortress. Our coach will then take us in the direction of Terazije, Parliament, City Hall, Pioneer Park and Slavija Square. We then take a walk through the park of Karadorde to visit the Temple of Saint Sava. The coach tour continues to Knez Milos Street, known as the ‘Street of the Embassies’, and to Tito’s mausoleum. Dinner is at a local restaurant. Day 5 Belgrade - Sarajevo Our journey today takes us from Belgrade to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. The route takes us through Zvornik, a historic town sadly devastated in the Bosnian War. We continue, with a backdrop of scenic views of Romanija Mountain and along the River Drina, to the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. Our hotel for two nights is the Hotel President (4T). Day 6 Sarajevo In the company of an expert local guide, take a half-day walking tour of Sarajevo - a city in which, over a period spanning four hundred years, mosques, synagogues, orthodox and Roman Catholic churches have been built side by side. We will visit Bašcaršija, one of the best maintained old bazaars with diverse stores and restaurants, and Principe Bridge, site of the 1914 assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, which led directly to the First World War. This afternoon join a tour to the War Tunnel - a lifeline to the citizens of Sarajevo during the 1990s conflict. Dinner is included at a local restaurant this evening. Day 7 Sarajevo - Mostar - Capljina We travel today from Sarajevo to Capljina, visiting Mostar on the way. Mostar was the worst affected Bosnian city in the Yugoslav wars but a sightseeing tour will show the local effort that has gone into making this city beautiful once again. See the famous Old Stone Bridge, the colourful Old Bazaar and a typical Turkish house. We continue to Capljina and the Hotel Mogorjelo (4T) for dinner and overnight stay. Day 8 Capljina - Becici After breakfast, we depart for Becici, on the outskirts of the popular Montenegrin resort of Budva. Check in at Hotel Budva (4T), where we also dine tonight. Day 9 Budva Your morning sightseeing tour of Budva will take you through its rich tapestry of cobbled streets and shady piazzas. The local guide will bring tales of this ancient city, one of the oldest in the Balkans, to life. The afternoon is free for further exploration, stroll along the promenade or relax on one of the numerous sandy beaches. Dinner is arranged at a local restaurant. Day 10 Becici - Kotor - Dubrovnik We continue for Kotor this morning for a tour of this coastal city. This beautiful fortified old town, protected by UNESCO, is surrounded by stunning scenery, between steep mountains and the deepest natural ria in the Mediterranean Sea. During some free time here, it may be easy to lose yourself in the maze of lanes and hidden piazzas within the medieval walls, but its small size makes it easy to find your way again. We depart for Dubrovnik and the Hotel Valamar Argosy (4T), on the stunning coastline of Babin Kuk, Dubrovnik’s northern peninsula. Dine at the hotel tonight. Day 11 Dubrovnik After breakfast we enjoy a fascinating city tour of Dubrovnik, including a visit to the Romanesque Franciscan Monastery with Europe’s third oldest pharmacy, where old apparatus is displayed. The tour is followed by a panoramic coach drive above the city with breathtaking views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands. With an abundance of places to visit in Dubrovnik, the afternoon is free to explore independently. Maybe walk the city walls, experience one of the museums dedicated to defenders of Dubrovnik during the Yugoslav wars, including the powerful War Photo museum or Visia Cinema, which brings the city’s history to life through 3D films and holograms, or enjoy delicious gelato in a sun-bleached square. Dinner is arranged at a local restaurant. Day 12 Dubrovnik - London Today we travel to Dubrovnik Airport for our direct, scheduled British Airways flight to London Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
