With its well-known green and lush scenery, Ireland is a great country to visit, and an incredible one to walk and hike through! While cities such as Dublin provide a great experience and friendly people, Ireland truly shines in its rural areas and villages. There are a number of mountains and trails for hiking and walking, no matter your experience level, and there will be beautiful views no matter which you select!
1. The Bog of Frogs Loop, Howth, County Dublin
A strenuous, 12km hike that gives views of cliffs and Dublin Bay, as well as the golf courses and wooded areas Howth offers. There are signs posted for shorter hikes along the same route.
2. Glenevin Waterfall Walk, Clonmany, County Donegal
An easy, 1km hike to the beautiful Glenevin Waterfall, with picnic areas along the way for a scenic meal.
3. Cadamstown Silver River Nature Trail, Letter, County Offaly
A moderate, 6.4km loop along the riverbanks of the Silver River, allowing for views of the midlands and the local wildlife.
4. National Famine Way, Strokestown, County Roscommon (starting point)
An easy, 165km walking journey connecting the National Famine Museum in Strokestown to the Famine Memorial in Dublin. There are markers throughout, and a great deal of history.
5. Cosan na Naomh (Saints Road), Ceann Trá (Ventry), County Kerry
A moderate, 17.7km pilgrim path on the Dingle Peninsula, ending at the foot of Mount Brandon, with great views of the Kerry coastline.
6. Achill Island - Dooagh Loop, Dooagh, County Mayo
An easy, 4km loop with views of the stunning cliffs of Mayo! Achill Island is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
7. Sheep’s Head - Poets Way Loop, Sheepshead, County Cork
A strenuous, 16km loop with scenic coastal views of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula.
8. Cavan Way, Dowra, Country Cavan
A moderate, 26km trail that passes by the Shannon Pot and into the northern Cuilcagh, mainly on quiet and open roads and trails.
9. Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail, Balla, County Mayo
A moderate, 61km trail leading to the mountain of Croagh Patrick, or “The Reek,” as it’s locally known. This trail does not include an ascent of the mountain, but does pass by many heritage sites!
10. Durrow Leafy Loop Walk, Durrow, County Laois
A strenuous, 23km loop featuring gorgeous mixed woodlands with several heritage sites along the way.
