Dominican Republic

Jesse Fagan (a.k.a. the Motmot or just “Mot”) has been passionate about birds since his teens, when he had an encounter with a flying Pileated Woodpecker. He has birded throughout the United States, including spending seven years in Texas, and since 1995 has been birding and for a time living in northern Central America. He is currently in the final stages of completing a field guide to the region (which will include the countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize), due to be published in 2014. In addition, Mot has birded in or led tours to Mexico, CostaRica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Morocco, and Madagascar. He also enjoys leading many of the Field Guides tours in the Caribbean. He likes to think he can bird anywhere at any time and still show you the birds, but most importantly, a good time.Jesse holds a B.S. and an M.S. in mathematics from Texas Tech University. He is currently living in Lima, Peru Tom Johnson Grew up watching birds in central Pennsylvania. Interested in science and the outdoors from a young age, he became involved in a variety of field projects throughout his school years, including banding migrant landbirds and conducting point counts for the 2nd Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas. He was fortunate to pursue undergraduate studies in biology at Cornell University, where he became even more excited to learn about systematics and migration while surrounded by the amazing ornithologists and birders of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Since graduating from college, Tom has spent much of his time studying seabirds off the east coast of North America while conducting line transect surveys from NOAA ships between Nova Scotia and the Bahamas. When he's not otherwise occupied, he loves to devote time to wandering, taking photos, and searching for vagrants and hybrid birds. Tom has long been interested in sharing his enthusiasm for exploring bird identification, distribution, and migration dynamics; he is a regional editor for North American Birds magazine and writes a regular column on identification for “Jesse Fagan is an excellentguide: great attitude, lots of fun, expert at bird findings, nice withgroup management. Perhaps most of all, he loves sharing his passion for the natural world with others out in the field, and he's excited to have the opportunity to do this while leading for Field Guides. Ivan Motaʼs Passion for birds, especially owls and nightjars, began in elementary school, and birds have been his major interest for the twenty-five years since. He holds a degree in computer graphics, but after a stint working as an international intern for the Project Puffin Seabird Restoration Program based in Bremen, Maine, Ivan decided to return to school and earn a degree in biology. During his time in Maine, Ivan worked with biologists at field stations on five islands conducting population and productivity counts and other studies on several species including Atlantic Puffins, Arctic and Roseate terns, and Razorbills. He has also worked with a Bicknellʼs Thrush conservation program in the Dominican Republic and with the Ornithological Society of the Hispaniola, helping with fieldwork, Christmas counts, and rare bird sightings.
