What's this trip about?

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan tops many travel bucket lists. Once an isolated region shrouded in mystery, it is now a global leader in sustainable tourism, prioritizing the protection of its cultural and natural heritage. This tour introduces you to Bhutan's culture, landscapes, and proud people, combining excursions to historic sites and heritage institutions with a remarkable cycling route through picturesque valleys. We begin in Paro, where we visit the National Museum and the city’s grand dzong, a fortified medieval Buddhist monastery. Then, we drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, where we learn about the country’s spirituality, crafts, and elusive national animal (the takin), before embarking on our inaugural ride into the woodlands north of town. Day 3 marks a rite of passage for cyclists in Bhutan as we conquer the formidable Dochula Pass, rewarded with a long, winding descent into the Punakha Valley, where we’ll spend two nights. Here, we visit the country’s most photogenic dzong and bike across a long suspension bridge to enter an agrarian world of rice terraces. Before returning to Paro, we treat (and challenge!) ourselves with one final ride into Punakha’s hinterland, riding up and down densely forested hillslopes. We save Bhutan’s most iconic attraction — the Tiger’s Nest Monastery — for last and hike up to this fabled temple perched atop a cliff. The tour ends in Paro.Join us and experience the hidden charm of Bhutan that most tourists only glimpse from the window of a tour bus!

Day 1

Welcome to Paro, the gateway to Bhutan! We pick you up from the airport and, in the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Bhutan and the Rinpung Dzong, the first dzong (traditional Bhutanese fortified monastery) on this journey. In the evening we convene for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

We transfer from Paro to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Here, we visit a colossal Buddha statue, meet the takin — Bhutan’s national animal — and learn about traditional crafts. In the afternoon, we cycle through terraced fields, villages, and pine forests for our first taste of rural and wild Bhutan from the saddle!

Day 3

Today's ride takes us from Thimphu to Punakha via the iconic Dochula Pass. The 18 km ascent is rewarded with views of sacred Buddhist structures and the eastern Himalayas. We then descend 40 km along winding mountain roads into the Punakha Valley

Day 4

Today, we explore the Punakha Valley, starting with visits to the grand Punakha Dzong and the Chhimi Lhakhang monastery. After lunch, we cycle a leisurely loop, crossing a swaying metal bridge over the Puna Tsang Chu River and enjoying stunning views of terraced rice paddies and towering mountains.

Day 5

Our final ride follows the Mo Chhu River upstream into lush, tranquil woodlands. Challenging climbs are rewarded with scenic views, a picnic lunch in the forest, and a refreshing descent down the same way. In the afternoon, we transfer back to Paro for the final two nights of the tour.

Day 6

We’ve saved Bhutan’s most iconic site, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, for last! We’ll hike up the steep trail, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Paro Valley, to reach this legendary cliffside monastery. In the evening we meet for a farewell dinner.

Day 7

We transfer you to the airport for your onward flight, or you may choose to extend your stay and discover more of magical Bhutan.
